I just found out that I may have a chance to hunt Montana next year. The area is north of Brusett in the Missouri breaks area. Does anyone have any information on hunting in this area? They said it was mostly for mule deer but are there any elk there? I'm always game to go hunt a new area I would just like to know what I may be getting myself into.
thanks,
ds

LAST EDITED ON Nov-17-05 AT 09:00AM (MST)[p]Good luck drawing an bull elk tag in there unless you are a stick flinger. Even if you draw a deer/elk combo that does not permit you to hunt elk in that area as you must then also draw a special elk permit.

Get the maps and call the FWP region 7 HQ and the CMR HQ in Lewistown. They have all the info you need.

seems near impossible to get a bull tag in eastern mont. At least they let you kill cows on a general in region 5 and part of 7 down by melstone. My dads place has some nice sign of bulls but I have yet to see one,

I do believe the odds of drawing an Elk permit for that area are about as good if not worse than drawing a sheep tag. Unlimited archery permits but tough bowhunting. Alot of open country and brush choked draws in that area.

It is special to get that elk tag, but it is a fine place to deer hunt. It is a beautiful area and you will not forget it.

Thanks everyone for the information. I started looking at the Montana regs last night and have a few more questions but I've got time to get it figured out. Does Montana use any type of preference point system for elk or is it a simple draw every year? Either way, I'll enjoy the muley hunting and be glad for the opportunity. Is it better at the beginning or towards the end of the mule deer season?
thanks again,
ds

Montana implemented a points system for elk a few years ago, but even with bonus points its still a tough draw in the breaks. I know people that have been putting in for 20 years or more and have yet to get a permit.
