I have never been a huge fan of the Utah Spike hunt until....

This year my 16 year old son decided to take up Bow Hunting. He spent several weeks honing his shooting skills, buying some camo, and talking to me about taking him hunting.

He had his heart set on hunting elk. I think I got the hook in him in 07 when I brought home an Elk off of the Dutton.

He has had the opportunity to hunt Deer, rabbits, etc, but he now wanted to get out in the mountains during this magical time. I think he was just as excited with the prospect of seeing a big bull as he was with the chance to shoot a cow or spike.

Finally the stars lined up and I was able to take him on his first Archery Elk Hunt. We left the house at 2:30pm (just after school was out) and headed to the trail head. We walked in slowly to the water hole that we have shot several elk at over the years. I showed him several other very good areas, and shared with him some hunting stories. I had him worked into a lather by the time we arrived at our destination.

We found LOTS of track and a good spot to sit for the night.

Soon after we settled in we started to hear elk mewing...Here they come he said. He was right.
A dry cow worked her way within 30 yards, and Tanner let the arrow fly.

As the cow ran off, I looked over and said. ?Well you just killed an elk, get ready for some work?

It took us until 11pm to get the elk quartered out and hauled back to the truck. He made about 20 phone calls on the way home bragging about his first archery Elk hunt, and his first archery Elk.

So...Thanks Utah for giving us the opportunity to hunt Elk! Tanner is hooked. He now dreams of the day that he can chase the big one! He has asked me 10 times this week how many points he has, and when he thinks he could draw. What a great HUNT!

Of course the camera batteries were dead...uugh. So here is a photo from my phone.

That is a great story! Sounds like you have a great hunting partner now!! I really like the spike hunts for years when things don't work out in the draws. My son can start hunting big game next year. You can bet I will be taking him after a nice fat cow or spike! Congrats to both of you!

what a cool story! congratulations. i still got 11 years till i can take my daughter. cant wait

Great job. Great story. I shot a spike this year in one of my favorite hunting spots and although my normal hunting buddy was not there when I shot him, my 12 year old son was sitting next to me not 5 yards a way. He thought it was pretty cool to see the animal go down and was more intrigued when I started to quarter that thing out. He did get a little nervous when we were cutting it up at 10 p.m. with no moon. It got pretty dark and I could tell that he would be glad to get back to the truck. Times and memories like these can't be replaced.

Great job again and thanks for sharing.

THAT IS HUNTING AT IT'S FINEST!!!! SHARING IT WITH YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER!!!!

Great, great, great!!! I need to revise my opinion a little. I am usually against spike hunts but for youth, I say let it happen. I would bet that his hunt means more to him than all of our LE hunts.

Great job!!
