Back from Montana

We're back from eight days of deer huntimg in Eastern Montana. We had a great time as usual and saw lots of deer. Some we're on property we had permission to hunt and some weren't. I only pulled the trigger once. I met Wa_Wiki_Hunter back there, nice talking to ya Jeff. Hope yo got a bruiser. We saw you headed south on Monday. We were helping the rancher ship cattle about 6 miles south of town when you guys flew by.
The place we hunt is about 40 miles from town on a dirt road, it's a good road at first then slows you down some.
The day I got my buck we had walked in and out of all the canyons and draws to the back fence and found this buck about 1pm trotting out of the hills like a dog sniffing for his dinner. It took a while to get to where we had seen him and once there we glassed the area to try and find him again, he disappeared. There were two does on the hill in front of us that had us pinned in our spots and they finally stood up to feed. They were looking around and started looking to my left into the open grass area so I glanced over my shoulder and there he was. He didn't know we were there and looked in my direction, I could see he was as wide as his ears and decided he was the one. One shot, a short drag and a 3 mile walk back to the truck we were driving out to pick him up. We were able to drive across the prairie to within about a quarter mile then buggie him to the truck.
It was a great hunt. I saw a shooter two hours out on the first day but passed him up as we had eight days to hunt, got this boy on the third afternoon.
Here's some pic's.

That badlands country is deceiving. It may not be up and down as much but you have can cover a ton of terrain and not find deer. Nice, heavy buck!

Nice pics and nice buck.....gotta love Eastern MT! Where did you stay back there?

Congrats on the success.
That's the way to pack him out!

Very very nice buck. I love that country in eastern Montana.
The deer carts are the only way to go. My brother and I have used ours many times. Way to go.

Mslyr,
We hunt the Jordan area and stay at Fellmans and eat at The Rancher's, the best burger east of the Musselshell!!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-20-05 AT 08:40PM (MST)[p]Good to meet you, Tally. That was a nice buck you killed. I still can't get over that Whitetail that was taken to the cooler - what a HAWG.

Sorry we didn't get to talk again - there was a death in our family on Monday morning and we had to pack up and leave. We were on our way home when you saw us go by. Not a fun drive home - it took about 9 hours for us to get to Missoula in a snow storm, so we stayed the night and got home on Tuesday. We decided to go the I-90 route with the looming bad weather forecast we heard.

We got two deer out of five tags the 1-1/2 days we were hunting, and I passed up several 22-24 inchers the first day. My "pickiness" ended up biting me in the you-know-what. No meat in the freezer for me this time. Still had a great time, and hunted hard that one full day we had. I know we would have went 5 for 5 if we had been able to stay the full week - it seemed like the deer were just starting to get heavy into the rut. Ended up spending the rest of the week back home and attending the funeral. We almost decided to drive the "red-eye" back over today to hunt throught Tuesday so we could get home for Thanksgiving. Responsibility got the best of me, though.

Anyway, great pics. That's some fun hunting over there, and I hope we get to go back next year. If we hook up again, we'll sit down over a few beers and swap lies!

Congrats on the nice deer, and it was good to meet you.

Nice buck Tally!
You didn't happen to see fletch back there did ya. I sure wish he'd quite goofing off and get his Montana pics on here.

Wa,
Sorry to hear about the passing. That's always a tough drive home to that.

That was a real PIG of a whitetail at Ryan's!!
Hope you draw again next year, they owe ya one.
Nice to meet ya.
