NM 2B Late Hunt

We had a great hunt this year in NM 2B. It just got better and better everyday. We were seeing more and more mature bucks with the does by the day. Opening day found us glassing up a solid 180 class buck, but we let him walk hoping that we could find a better one. The next two days were spent sorting through tons of 140-170 class 4x4's, but no big boys. Finally on the fourth day we found this buck. It was a combination of the matching extras and the old age of the buck that sealed the deal. We later aged the buck at 8.5 and probably on his way down. We were preasantly surprised when we put the tape on him and came up with 181 1/8. We had guessed him in the mid to low 170's. Over all it was a great hunt, can't wait for next year. It still amazes me that you can walk 1 or 2 miles off the roads in this unit and have the forest all to yourself.

Thats a great buck , CONGRATS! Yeah I agree with you on the road statement , I was there this past Jan for the bow hunt and had a blast . The snow was deeeeep too , but the road hunters still drove 310 like crazy . I hunted west into Bancos and saw some good deer just couldn't seal the deal , but had a great time . Again congrats on a super buck....NMHUNTNUTT

Thanks, bancos is a great area for the late bow hunt, it seems to be an excellent wintering ground, although there are a few resident deer there. Seems like that is the biggest challenge during the late bow hunt, that good ol crunchy snow. Some friends of mine were hunting in bancos for the last rifle hunt and missed a 180 buck opening morning and ran out of light on a 140-150 buck later that evening, but the pressure bancos gets pushed the deer further down the canyon towards the lake.
