Utah points ?

Next year, 2010, I'll have 10 NR points in Utah.

Enough to have a shot at a decent tag like Manti or Fish Lake, muzzle loader or archery, but not enough for a great tag.

The state of Utah seems hell bent on lowering quality by reducing age objectives and selling to many tags.

I'm worried that if I hold out for a San Juan or Pahvant archery tag, the quality will drop and it won't be worth it.

So, should I spend my points next year, or hold out another 4 or 5 years+, and hope they don't kill off all the good bulls ?

SJ and Pahvant should still have quality bulls for quite a while. It all depends on how long you want to keep applying. If you are in no hurry keep putting in for a higher quality tag.

If you've got 10 points now you're most likely gonna be waiting a good bit longer than 4 or 5 more years for a Pahvant or San Juan tag.

That being said, I would be surprised if the quality on these units, along with the Monroe and maybe a couple others, drops significantly. Tag numbers are increasing but not overly so on these "top tier" units...Utah doesn't wanna lose that 400" bull production and in order to keep it up they gotta keep the premier units.

Fish Lake, Wasatch, Manti, Nebo, etc, etc...I'm all for increased tag numbers, even if it does mean decreased quality. INCREASED opportunity and DECREASED point pools. Let's do it Utah. Not every unit in the state needs 400" giants. I've got no problem with the premier units, not at all...but let's build a bona fide "second tier" where guys can draw a tag within a reasonable amount of time and have the chance to kill a decent 300-type bull.

If you dont want to wait and still want a chance to kill a good bull than go now. the snajuan and pahvant are freat units if you want to waid my dad killed a 380+ bull in 07 down there.i agree they need to make it take less time to draw ive got 13 pts and have been putting in since i was a kid.But in response to increasing quality and quantity there is no way that should have put in the spike hunt on the le units. it will kill the current crop of bulls so in 4 yrs even the great units will be down. just my 2 cents. I Know of a local boy scout group that for an activity is going to spike hunting in the books and it is thing like this that are going to destroy elk hunting in utah.

if spike hunt is still during archery do not do it! its up to you on units if your happy wiht a 330 bull any unti is good if you want a legit shot at 370s and up hold out for better units
