Which caliber?

Looking at buying a new rifle...Mostly for antelope and high country/long range mulies. Currently have a REM 700 Mountain rifle in 280 cal. It does good and has downed several animals including elk. Looking at 240 weatherby mag in the ultra light version. Any recommendations from the experts? Thanks

Eric

I guess I forgot that .25 is the min cal for Wy. Is this correct? If so what about the 257 Weatherby Mag?

.24 is minimum caliber for big game in Wy. That Wthby mag is going to be expensive to shoot.

You have a great mid range caliber. Actually it is a caliber that you can use on most everything on the continent with the right bullets. Years ago I was faced with the same dilema as I had an '06 and a 7mm Mag. I didn't learn much in Econ 201 but I did pick up the term "marginal utility." Maybe you have already heard of this term and have a good understanding of its meaning. For those that don't, it kinda means the overall use you can get out of an item. If you have a pair of tennis shoes only, you have a certain level of utility. If you have a pair of hunting boots, tennis shoes, and dress shoes, you have expanded your marginal utility. In order to maximize your marginal utility in hunting rifles, think in terms of all the species and what you hunt. In my case, I loved shooting coyotes, prarie dogs, deer, antelope, and elk. It didn't make sense to use the 2 calibers I had so I sold the 7mm (old Browning Safari Grade) and got enough out of it to buy a used Rem .223 which I love and put enough toward a stainless .338 as I dreamed of Alaska as well. So in my humble opinion I greatly expanded my marginal utility. My nephew was getting into hunting so I gave him my Rem BDL '06 that I bought when I was 12. I then purchased a pre 64 Mod 70 .270. Now I have something that I hunt varmits with, something great for antelope and deer with, and something I can hunt elk and Alaska with. The .338 is the most awesome elk rifle I have ever used and I wouldn't hesitate to hunt the big bears with it. Now beleive it or not, I thought my wife needed the same marginal utility so I go her an Encore that she uses with a .223 barrel a .270 barrel, and a muzzle loader. I found her an old 1957 pre 64 .338 in prestine condition as well. She'll never use it....however, IF I COULD ONLY HAVE ONE RIFLE, I firmly believe that my marginal utility would be maximized by having a .300 Weatherby Mag. The range of bullets is huge and its got enough moxy to do it all. Wow was that long winded or what???

I have the same Rem .280 mountain rifle. Most accurate
gun I own. Would trade off the wife before I would that rifle.

Knowing the ballistics of the gun and grain your shooting is important and probably means a heck of a lot more than what caliber to shoot. I have been shooting a 7mm and really like the long range capeability.

I own a Remington Model 700 in .308 caliber and wouldn't trade it for the world. But i would also like to have the new 300 wsm if ya know what i mean

"Hunting is business, and business is good".

You said:

"Mostly for antelope and high country/long range mulies."

Now if you want a new gun, then by all means have at it. However, if you mean what you say in this statement, then any gun you get for this purpose would be simply a step sideways. If you go down in caliber, you get a great antelope gun, but sacrifice the "long range mulies". And the 280 performs as good as any gun out there for long range mulies, so there is no need to step up.

I personally have a 270 and think it is the best gun for what you are looking to do, and the 280 does everything the 270 does and then some. Soooo, what was the question??

Good call tx! I think I'll save my money and purchase my son a new rifle instead. Any thoughts on the .260? I have a .308 ready for him, Browning stainless stalker. He has shot it with the new low recoil ammo and does well. I think he'll be fine size wise because he is 8 right now so by the time he is 12 he should be good for the heavy ammo. Just curious on the .260 if you have any experience.

I am going to say a 270 WSM because I think there is going to be a Savage 270 WSM under the tree tomorrow from Santa :).

As I don't know anything about the 260, can't comment on it.

What about a 270 and low recoil ammo? I wonder if this might service him better in the long run until he steps up to the 308. There are so many more ammo choices for the 270 and the gun itself and ammo for it would be cheaper.

Another gun I like is the 25-06. I took my niece out last weekend and she killed a whitetail with one. 117 grain interlock hornady bullets are deadly and don't kick much.

I've got a good back-up .270 that has some miles on it. I really want to get something that we don't have currently. 25-06 appears to be what I think would suit him. Is it inexpensive to shoot? I think varmits/coyete's will be practice. I just want him to have his own, get good with and be able to hunt with it for years to come. Plus Dad might want to use it when I get old and get tired/smarter and quit carrying those big guns.

The 25-06 is popular enough to not be really expensive to shoot and it is big enough to take down a mulie. However, from what you describe you want for your son, the 243 might really fit the bill too. Would be a great coyote, varmit gun that kicks less than any of the guns we have discussed so far. Along with the 270 and 30-06, it is probably one of the most popular models and therefore you can walk into any wal-mart and find ammo. That means cheap ammo to. That is the other gun I have for kids in Texas to take game up to whitetails. I wouldn't choose it as my favorite gun if the buck of a lifetime walks out, but it is what I pick up when I go meat hunting for a doe.

i can tell you what not to do , dont buy something that the shells are hard to find ,,, we have a savage .284 is a killer gun zippy quick and plenty of punch , but finding shells over the counter is pretty much out of the question , just my 2 cents worth :)

Thanks for all the input...you guys here at MM have helped me make up my mind. I'll be buying a .243, cheap to shoot and easy to find. Thanks guys.

I agree...see earlier in this message, decided to spend the $ on a rifle for my son. Thanks for confirming though.
