Nice Buck!

Any idea how old he is? Maybe its the picture but he looks really old?

Thanks for the compliments. This buck may look old in the pictures but he's only a 4 or 5 year old. This was a great hunt but like most hunting trips it didn't come off without a hitch. My partner couldn't leave until opening day so we ended up leaving at 4am opening day of the 3rd season (national forest, public land).

We had a couple of detours that really put us behind. The first was a huge rock slide that resulted in a 50 mile detour and then a mountain pass that had just been pounded the night before with a foot of snow.
We got behind two big trucks, half way down the back side one of the trucks lost control around a turn and flipped over. We got out and helped the driver who was in good shape. Not much damage to the truck but I don't know how they got it flipped over again.

We didn't start hunting until 10:00am. Went on two different hikes which ended pretty much the same no sightings and no fresh sign. There was 3" of fresh snow which is always a big help. Second day which was a good one for me started off slow again. Did some glassing early and then started beating the bush again, did see a few fresh tracks and a group of doe's but no sign of any bucks. The afternoon hike was kind of exciting because I walked into a large meadow and watched 10 doe's feeding together. I watched them for about an hour hoping a buck would come out. It was starting to get late and my jacket was drenched in sweat which prompted me start moving again.

On my way out I took a different route and ended up walking the edge of another meadow. Half way through the meadow this buck comes bounding out. I quickly went for my shooting stixs and then realized a tree would make a better rest. The buck didn't give me a shot until he was 10 yards from the other tree line. He slowed down and I made one 250 yard shot, the buck fell so quick I didn't even see him drop. It was hard to believe that in less than 48 hours from leaving, I managed to have one of the greatest hunting experiences ever. Wish my 9 day archery elk hunt would have ended like this, but it wouldn't be as fun if it was easy.
The next two days were spent trying to find another buck for a friend but it didn't happen. We did see more deer the last two days and a couple small bucks, just nothing he was willing to take. Everything that the CDOW has done to improve the deer herds has been beneficial, I doubt a many deer would live past three without the new regulations.
