Hunt area questions

Been a long time since I posted (since I no longer live in a mule deer state). That is a big part of my issue. I am now living in Mansfield Texas and am having Mule Deer withdrawl.

I plan on putting in for some premium hunts this year, and need help finding some good areas. I don't need honey holes, just some premium units to apply for. Hopefully if I work the odds, I can draw 1 good tag. I am planning on putting in for New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, South Dakota, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, and Colorado. The only 2 states I already know where to put in for are AZ, and SD.

I really want a good DIY hunt. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Blair

Anyone? Again, I am not looking for Honey holes or a hand out, just some starting points.

I'd look at Colorado since it's close, and I believe there are many units you will have a good chance of drawing with zero points. Just look at the Colorado Division of Wildlife web site. There's lots of info on there.

I agree on the Colorado choice. If I were you I would contact "deerking" and get his suggestions on where to apply in Co. Good Luck!

Bob,

Thanks for the response. Colorado is on my list. I am trying to find units, areas that would be considered "premium" hunts like the kiabab. Units with low draw odds, high success, or high numbers of trophys. I am doing my own research by checking B&C, P&Y, etc. But would also like hunter input. Areas change, and sometimes historical figures don't always paint a clear picture of today. Any thoughts on some areas in Colorado to look?

The late rifle hunts in Idaho units 45, and 40, produce some 190 + bucks every year. The fish and game commission will probably institute a bonus point system for the next season but until then it is a lottery drawing. Good luck drawing a tag, your going to need it.

Thanks for the info on Idaho. I will research those units. As far as needing luck to draw, that is why I am looking to apply in every state that produces big buck (and bulls). Hopefully by applying for 12-14 hunts between deer and elk I will draw 1. I know that doesn't always work, but worth a shot.
