Opening Morning Wasatch Bull

I'm posting this for a friend (Keith) who shot his first bull elk on opening day of the Wasatch limited entry rifle hunt.

We hunted near White River were we found four separate bulls bugling in the same small canyon. We started a stock on the closest one that had the deepest growl. After being into the stock for about 15 minutes we spooked his cows and sent them running for the bottom of the canyon. The bull was right on their heals and Keith determined he might be a shooter. The cows cleared the bottom and filed up the other side of the canyon but the bull wasn't with them. We figured he had hung up in the bottom just out of site and would most likely follow in short order.

We quickly setup the shooting tripod and got Keith snuggled into a comfortable postion. We also set up our spotting scope so we could take a good look at the bull to make sure he is what Keith wanted. Sure enough, after only a few minutes the bull made his move and started working his way out of the bottom and up the opposite side of the canyon. The bull had good mass, six points on each side and nothing was broken. We ranged to a spot ahead of the bull, dialed the scope, stopped the bull with a cow call just ahead of the ranged spot and Keith put a 180 grain Nosler Accubond bullet through him from 815 yards at 7:15 am.

From there Keith all but flew to where the bull lay dead on the sage brush hillside. In fact I don't think he felt the pain the rest of us did as we packed the quarters out in our backpacks to the truck. He did a great job on his first bull....and his dad, Larry was there to experience the whole thing with him.

Right there with you Brandon, I hope 815 was a typo too. Way to far for anybody. Buy a bow.

Long range shooters definately don't get the respect they deserve. If you can hit it, shoot it. What's the difference?
Way to go, not many first timers can shoot 815 with buck fever

I get so tired of the "I can't do it, so neither can you" attitude from some of you guys. He made a great shot, who are you to judge him? Do you know him? Have you been at the range to see him shoot? Do you know the limits of his rifle? Were you there when he shot it? I guarantee that I could out shoot 90% of the hunters out there with me shooting at 800 yards and them shooting at 300 as could many others on this sight. I have seen others hit a paper plate sized target at 1000 yards 5 out of 5 shots and I have seen other hunters at the range that couldn't hit that same target at 200 yards with any of the 5 and guess what.....they are still on the hill hunting just like me. Whose more unethical?

BTW, I am mostly a bowhunter so don't give me the "a true hunter gets close" crap. I have never shot an animal at more than 35 yards with it. Eight yards being the closest.

There's only one degree of dead........CONGRATS on an awesome shot!! You have the makings of a true marksman keep up the practice.

Why does it have to be B1tch session about long range when a guy post a picture he shoot a long range, READ MY LIPS, people hunt differently in different parts of the country it MIGHT NOT BE YOUR WAY it don't make it wrong or right just different.
People sitting over feeders, people sit over water holes, people sit over bean fields, people hunt deer with dogs, people hunt deer with bows, people hunt deer with handguns,The friggen list goes on and on, not all ways are my way but they are a hunters way to some.

Marley great post
I use to hunt with guys if they could hit a 5 gallon bucket at 100 yds they was good to go, a 150 yd shot was long for them..

I now have those same guys shooting for Sub 1" groups at 100 yds and trying to shrink those groups and they shoot pretty good out to 600 yds and they are loving life now that they have put in the time to shoot farther each year. Now they are telling me they want to get some 30-378's like mine to start hunting with. 815 yards is a far poke but if you can do it. DO IT. I have kill 4 bull at the following yards with my LR rifle in 30-378 caliber at 502,503,80,and 80, they all died from one bullet.
A few years back I shot a coyote at 782 (he looked like a ant) that is the best I have done in shooting live game.

By the way nice bull and good shooting. Wish I was sitting next to ya and saw the whole thing go down. I'm hoping a get a shorter shot in NM but if I don't I will unlimber the GunClaw and the 30-378 and see if we can put one in the sweet spot.

better get used to it, long range shooting is taking off, thanks to "best of the west show" I got my 7mag to shoot out to 600 so far.....

tell me about it i shot my bull at 96 yards with a bow and never heard the end of it and i could do it again 10 out of 10 times on an elk

Geez, relax...... I actually thought 815 was a typo. Think about that for a second... over 800 yards! I told him nice bull.

No typo on the 815 yards. I ranged it and dialed the scope myself. The gun is more than capable, and obviously Ketih was familiar with how to put it to work on the bull.

Here is a side view of the bull. He rough scored at 337 B&C.

Nice bull looks great!!!! You should have waited him out to 1000 yrds!! Really make em whine:) Again nice bull!!!! Great equipment makes our jobs as hunters extremely enjoyable and easy.

nice bull, the longer the better, that's what she said.the older i get the longer shots i take.knowing your rifle is what it all about.took a bull 4yrs back at 565 with my 06.congrats again.

Nice bull. I tend to think that the ultra long range shots take away some from the hunt. But I'm not going to tell experienced, practiced folks how to hunt. What worries me about this is tag holders going out with someone else who actually owns the rifle. There is an outfitter here in Wyoming that even advertises you can use his long range outfit. In this case the fact that the shooter didn't even dial in the scope raises some flags.

Great bull - Nice job! I love this time of the year. Can life get any better? I think not.

Congratulations again!!!

Nice Bull and thanks for sharing it with us.

It is also nice to actually see a limited entry hunter actually wearing orange.

Nice bull...

I am also into long range shooting and my personal rule is to never shoot an animal under a 1000 yards. Anything under a thousand is to easy for me and not sporting.

If I see an animal under a thousand yards away I either back up or scare it off...then shoot when he hits a 1K yards out.

When did hunter orange become a requirement for pictures?

It's not. You just have to wonder when you see endless pics of UT LE hunts with no orange. The vest taken off for the pic is easily explained. Pulling sweaty camo hats from your pack for the pics make you wonder. Second Chance Bull thread is an example.

Sorry about the highjack. I didn't mean to complain I just wanted to compliment their use of orange.

We don't know anything different. We just grew up wearing hunter orange when rifle hunting in Utah. If for nothing else it lets other hunters know we are people, not game animals moving through the timber.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-16-09 AT 07:07PM (MST)[p]long range hunting is awesome tell my 6.5 17 a 815 yard shot on a bull is not possible and i will laugh at you. i get of on long range shooting just as much as a bowhunter does on a 20 yard shot. it takes skill and talent. and let me tell you a whole lot of practice. dont knock it if you have not tried it. btw nice bull and awesome shot congrats

Congrates to Keith on a great Bull and shot, it is one he can be proud of.

Browtine - The first post might not have been a typo but I'm pretty sure this one is. :)

By the way nice bull bud.
