Ethics

I just wanted to get something off of my chest. After reading many of the posts lately, I have come to the conclusion that I am not an ethical person.

Please do not get angry. At least I have the guts to stand up and admit that I once took more than 1 shot to kill an elk, and of course the hardest thing to admit, yes I have driven a 4-wheeler.

So please, I ask you, the MM ethics commitee members, to dedicate this thread to ethics. Tell me how I, an enraged hunter from the worst state in the union, can improve.

FYI, telling me to shut-up doesn't count!!!!!

The only bobcat who doesn't know how to spell committe!!!

Hi, Best. welcome to the group, I am glad you have made the first step in admitting what you are. The next step is what are you going to do about it?

I shot a deer running three times once and it felt really good, I guess I am with you best

Thanks Grizz,

I just need some step by step instruction. I have already expressed that my brain power ain't runnin tu hi.

So just give me some ideas. I am considering subscribing to the Outdoors Channel and committing to only watch the non-fenced hunts. But thats a start and I am sure you could give me some more good ideas!

The only bobcat waiting!!!!!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-01-05 AT 05:01PM (MST)[p]Ethics. I hate the word. What ethics means is "don't you do anything that I do not like, but everything is ok for me to do."

See, it is like this folks. If a 400" bull is roaming the Pahvant, if someone other than myself shoots it, it is undoubtedly unethical. If I shoot it, I did it in the most ethical way possible.

If everyone on this board was ethical, then hunting in Utard would not be what it is. There would only be one hunter in an area, because we are so ethical we would drive away to another canyon until we found one no one was in.

All wheeler trails would not exist, because no one uses their wheeler except on designated routes. It is only ethical to use a wheeler off road when it is my game that I am going to have to drag some where. So if I am the only one off road then there are no illegal wheeler trails. None! No horse trails either. I use a pine bow and seeds to fix the tracks and pack out my own poo.

Garbage is another issue. Since we are so ethical, instead of putting on orange and toting a rifle, we would be walking around in orange like a bunch of "damn felons" carring garbage bags cleaning up the country side. That is what an ethical hunter does and there is so much garbage us ethical folks could not find time to hunt.

Now lets talk about ethical shooters. I have never seen one in 30 years. Never! Not one! Hunters rip there rifles from their scabbards and start shooting like a bunch of gang bangers. High or low the next guy yells and the pace of fire rapidly increases. If you don't do this then you are ethical and never get a thing because the unethical hunter shoots it out from under you. I sure hear a lot of unethical gunfire, but I never see it or do it.

Why do us ethical hunters come on this web site and ask whos animal it is? I hit the animal and trailed it and some lowlife unethical scab took it. Well now, that makes no sense. We are ethical and if it was a clean one shot ethical kill, then there would be no blood trail and our animals are piled up not taking a step or twitching gasping for a last breath of air.

Ethical lectures give me a pain in the ass. I hate the word in business, in life, and in the field. Sorry for saying ass. Now that is unethical. I am unethical. It is unethical. Oh hell, I give up....

According to the Webster's New Dictionary of the English Language.

ETHICAL 1.)relating to ethics 2.)honorable
COMMON 1.)public 2.)shared by several 3.)widely known, found, or observed 4.)ordinary.
SENSE 1.)meaning 2.)faculty of preceiving something physical 3.)sound mental capacity.

ktc
You might want to move to Iraq, I hear ethics are'nt a prioity there. the big game hunting sucks but the chuckar hunting should be good.

I am gladsomebody brought this up. I have been wanting to get this off my chest since it happened.
Last saturday I went elk hunting. I found a herd and picked out a nice young cow. The distance was 350 yards. I put my crosshairs just bit high and touched off a shot. I feel so ashamed. 350yards, if that isnt an unethical distance I don't know what is.
I felt a little better when I was gutting her and found that her heart was missing the upper half.

I will try my best to limit my shots to less than 100yards in the future.
I feel better getting that off my chest.

ktc, I'll bet that felt good to get off your chest. I had a perma-grin the whole time I was reading your post. But please stop using the ass word, I am getting offended, JK.

all ethics are is some jerks opinion. if it's legal, it's ok. screw ethics. can't legislate ethics. if ya do, then the antis will legislate us out of existence. shoot quail on the ground, take long running shots, use a quad, shoot em in the butt, use two poles, don't wait for the perfect broadside made the huntin' channel shot. if it's legal, you're ok in my book. granted it's a short book and most o' the pages ain't colored in yet, but you're still ok.

Hahaha @ the pheasant ground pounder! Who hasnt blastes a rooster on the ground before. I have never, would never, and no one on my family has ever done something so heinous! j/k =)

I don't think all you whiners want to have a discussion about ethics as much as you want to show off how sarcastic and mean spirited you can be. Bottom line is many of the people spouting off in here just don't want to be held accountable and they just don't want anyone telling them how they should do things. For me a 300 yard shot is not ethical because I do not practice at that range and am not comfortable with that distance. 9 times out of 10 I can get closer than that before taking a shot. If you feel comfortable with that shot and practice at that distance, then who am I to try to tell you when to shoot or not. We all want clean one shot kills, but real life dictates how many shots it will take to bring that animal to your possession.

One more thing, Lazy people take short cuts in life. They aren't willing to do what it takes to get in shape to hunt effectively, or practice at the range to be competent with their weapon. But there is no short cut to ethics. Whether you like the word or not.

I had ethics rammed down my throat in school. Do you know what the scholars decided? No one can define ethics! Think about it. Are ethics always legal? No. Are ethics always illegal? No. Everyone said they were ethical though. So when people decide to tell me their ethics I say they are full of crap. It goes along the lines of "do what I say, not what I do." Another definition that was left out by the scholar above is "it is ethical as long as I do not get caught." Since ethics are so open ended, every one of us can justify what is right and wrong and the reasons we do what we do. It is all about justification. We live in America where we are free to choose within the law. So I say do not force your morals down my throat with your ethical lectures. To go along with RLH I say you cannot legislate morals so give up on the goody-two-shoes crap.

I am feeling better already.;-) I have a drawer full of ethics paper work I had to write to get through school and it is just a bunch of hokie feel good crap to satisfy the professor.

How many of you guys are ethical sitting at work writing on MM on your employers dime? I am on break, I am done with my work, I had a pressing issue to write about for the betterment of mankind, blah, blah, blah. YOU ARE RIPPING OFF YOUR EMPLOYER AND AND YOU KNOW IT!!!

Man I feel good!:)

IDA,

You said "I don't think all you whiners want to have a discussion about ethics as much as you want to show off how sarcastic and mean spirited you can be"

That was an unethical comment. What do you think?

The only bobcat with hurt feelings!!!!!!

Whiners may have been a poor choice of words. You have the right to your opinion, but not the right to not be offended. Not trying to hurt anyone's feelings just have an ethical discussion. Differing opinions are great. But mine is greater.

I just want to say that with regards to shooting a pheasant on the ground I have not done that.

The truth of the matter is that I lined their heads up and shot 2 of the jumpy little ditch parrots with one shot.

Wow, I feel better than if I had gone to confession. Thanks for the chance to get that off my chest.

Other than that one incident, I can honestly say that I will never admit to being unethical!

I have to admit, I did take an unethical shot this year. My Dad and I had cow tags, and "estimated" these cows at about 350 yards, turns out it was 550 yards (I know I suck at judging distances, but you know how those cross-canyon shots can be decieving) I took out her heart and she died quickly. Nobody really put up a fuss about it, yet I'm sure if it was a big bull it would've been another story. At least I didn't gut-shoot her.

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

uh hi (stammer stutter) my name is #$%^^^ anddddd i shoot quail on the ground, off rocks , in trees, running , sitting , u get my drift ,,,, am i bad ? i feel sooooo much better getting this off my chest ,,,, its just they taste sooooooo good ,,,, ;-)

idabigduck. if you can't shoot at 300 yards it ain't ethics. you just can't shoot for $h!t. 300 ain't nothin' with modern rifles and optics. like i said, no such things as ethics, it's just jerks opinions. if it's legal, that's cool. i like the one about linin' up pheasant heads so's you can get more than one with one shot. my ol' man won't shoot at a quail unless they are on the ground and he can get more than one with a shot. i ain't never heard anybody use "ethics" unless they were bashin' somebody else for doin' somethin' they didn't like. alla the sudden we're all the ethics police. do what ya wanna do, as long as it's inside the law. only way you can hunt "ethically" is to leave your house nekked, on foot with no weapons.

RHL,
If you can put 3 shots inside a pie plate a 300 yards after bustin your rear to get to the top of the ridge, and your out of breath, and your elk is just about to go over the next ridge, and you don't have a steady rest, and you feel comfortable taking that shot, more power to ya. I just have more respect for the game than that. All these people that say they made 300, 400, 450 yard shots without the aid of a laser range finder are blowing smoke. There is no way to accurately estimate that kind of range in the field with so many variables. Ethics is what drives decency and there is a appalling lack of that in this world right now. I hate for it to spill over into the hunting fields also. "Just do what ever feels right for you", what a load of crap.

".......for it to spill into the hunting fields also?"

What turnip truck did you just fall off of? The dam hath runneth over my friend!

It is all about looking out for number one, because if you don't, no one will. While I am watching out for numero uno, I do not need someone telling me how to do it. The law does that. Just like Utah, telling me where to buy and what kind of beer I drink.

I'm new and maybe not welcome to this forum but I can't tell if some of you guys are playing it up for laughs or if you're off your meds. if you're serious I doubt it would be ethical or legal for you to own guns. check it out with your probation officer, maybe archery tags look good to you?

This is a great topic. This is just the place I needed to get this off my chest, it has been haunting me for years.
The thing I did is so hanous and unethical I hope you guys don't hate me for this.

So here goes. A few years ago I caught a bass off its bed and released it.
Please don't bash me too much, I'am truly sorry.

shotgunjim,

That took a lot of guts. I once killed some carp that were spawning. And then......, left the meat to rot.

The only bobcat needing a little therapy!!!!!!

"meds"? but "they" called them little bits of happiness when "they" "suggested" i take them ,,,,, lol oooookkkk i'll stop lol

ETHICAL?? ok,here goes, one time I had a nice four point buck at 50 yards,I got off two shots and by the time I got the lid back on the bottle the deer was gone.:RIMROCK

Bobcatbest,

You once caught a carp and let it rot? Sorry, there is no hope for you. You are just an unethical person. No turning back for you now! Beyond help.

I once shot a buck that was THINKING OF BEDDING DOWN!

How big was he? Let's just say he made the Nomad buck look like the Buck of Justice!

If you guys want to kick me off this site.....go ahead, I deserve it!

Steve

Idhunters: perhaps the funniest comment I've heard on this site. Not many things make me crack up here, but the jumpy ditch parrots.......LMFAO.

And yes distances can be accurately judged without range finders. (although I use one now that we have them) people have been doing it for years.

Bobcat: I have a confession also.....I once shot a cat in the rafters of my garage.....It fell to the floor and spun in circles before it died......am I a bad person??

ok ok ,,, actually i have done the right thing once or twice ,,, ;-) 2001 boulder mt southern zone , i shot a very nice fork big body and was just a shade under 24" tall and wide ,,, forks were 8" across back tines 13" (i always wanted a big fork) anyway i shot him ,,, went up the hill to get him and as i got to him 5 other bucks started milling around ,,, one was a very nice 4 point ,,,, others were all nice 3's and 4's but a little smaller , when i shot, the fork was the only deer i saw for sure others were just pieces here and there through the trees and brush ,,, so what i had was actually 6 bucks in a bunch ,,, so as i get up there i have the 4 point looking at me like an idiot at about 30 yards ,,,, i put the scope on his shoulder ,,, and said BOO ,,, the sucker looked at me like i was CRAZY,,, as it turned out i could have had like a zillion really CLOSE shots at him ,,, i ended up slinging my gun and waving my arms and hollering ,,, he still stopped and looked back a bunch of times ,,,, now i was way the hec up in the middle of the mountain not another soul around except the guy with me (he was below and couldnt see the deer) heard me yelling and said shoot the 4 pt ,,,, never even considered it ,,, mebbe i am ethical ;-)

uh did i even spell ethical right ? hope so ;-) is improper spilling un eeethical ? lol good grief and i said i'd stop lol

WEll, I guess I can confess. ONe time, I "donated" my deer to a buddy, without writing him a note, and didn't transfer the animal at my house or his.

SCOTT

WELL

AT ONE TIME IN THIS STATE WE WERE GETTING INVADED BY KALI & OTHER NON-RESIDENTS!!!

I SEEN SOME OF THEM KALI BOYS PULL OFF SOME AMAZING THINGS!!!

THIS HAS BEEN ALOT OF YEARS AGO!!!

ONE OF THE KALI HUNTERS AND HIS BUDDY HAD SHOT A MULE,HAD IT'S HEAD UP WHERE EVERYBODY COULD SEE IT,PROUD AS HELL!!!

WE BULLSHIPPED THEM FOR A FEW MINUTES,SAID THEY WERE COMMING BACK NEXT YEAR!!!

NOW I DIDN'T TELL THEM WHAT THEY HAD,THEY ALREADY KNEW,RIGHT???

WAS I UNETHICAL FOR NOT TELLING THEM???

THE ONLY bobcat NOT WANTING TO BREAK THEIR PRIDE!!!

Since everyone is coming clean here, I will too. I once road hunted. Without wearing 400 sq inches of hunter orange!!! Couldn't sleep for days. At least I didn't get caught. mtmuley

Okay guys, there are a coulpe things I would really like to get off my chest. Last year I took a deer at the range of 320 yards. This year I took a elk at 48 yards with a bow. I am such an unethical slob. Anbody have a cure for me?
To tell you the truth I dont see how it is unethical to take longer shots without the aid of a rangefinder. The way I look at it is as long as you have the cross hairs in line with chest you will either nail it or miss it.

MR. SLOB

Alright, time for me to come clean too.
The buck deer I shot this year just happened to drop right on an old two track road and I was able to drive and back my truck right up to it and load it up.
Was it unethical that I didn't have to drag it myself by hand a half of a mile to load it up?
I did kill it with one shot just under 300 yards so does that make up for it?

1. rifle hunters have it easy!

2. in-line muzzles are not ethical!

3. Modern bows are too easy!

4. Using F-250 diesal trucks is wrong!

I am going to widdle me a spear, and walk to my hunting area! Then, I will be a saint!

I at one time took a crap in the mountains and left the used toilet paper when I was young and unethical. I cried for hours looking at that toilet paper. What a dirty scoundrel I am. This has bothered me for years. I now put it in my pocket and take it home. I know the ethical hunter never litters. Used toilet paper included. I even pick up other hunter's used toilet paper to redeem myself after that disgraceful day.

Well, I think I'm ready. When I was really young, um, not that young, but a long time ago, well not too long ago. I'm sorry, just give me a moment.

This harder than I thought.

One time when I was hog hunting, I snuck up by crawling on a group of pigs, actually just walked up on, ah hell I was driving down the road when I saw them. Lucky for me they did not hear my jeep careening to a stop. I quickly tried to find the most, ahhh mature and ahaaa fattest one to harvest, I mean one that would stop and give me a shot. This was made very difficult by the dense cover they were hurriedly meandering through, ok I guess it more like tall weeds they were walking in. No, I must cleanse my sole, they were standing in a pasture, but the grass was at least a foot tall. Finally one stepped up to give me a clear shot. He was using another one as a stool to show the rest of the group he wasn't scared of the hunter. That's not correct, ahh he was fighting with another bore and was trying to show his dominants by placing his hooves on the others back, forget it, he was making love to a cute little sow, but at the incredibly long distance it was hard to tell. At this instance the lapse in judgement took place. I with a good rest on my shooting sticks, took a deep breath and squeezed the trigger, I meant to say I pulled the trigger from an "offhand" shooting position. It was over, he dropped off her like a ton of bricks with only a couple of small pelvic thrusts he passed.

One the long climb over to collect my animal I began feel dirty, unclean, stained, ashamed and unethical. I reached the my now tainted trophy after the full 30 yard hike. All I could think of is how many memories of him with his future kids and grand kids had I stolen. Every time I hold my children I think him, actually BOBCATBEST's post jogged my memory of this event for the first time in years. I hope this helps clear my conscience today.

PS; I own a 98'Yamaha Kodiak 400 and bought it new, but have never ridden it, ahhhhh other than the 87,062 miles that are on it.

Sincerely, Mike

" a couple of small pelvic trusts then he passed "
After I get done laughing that's an image I may have a hard time getting rid of also. :)

Hey Mr.B,
I think your type of hunting could be advertised as a Birth control hunt.

Porkys Ranch, pamphlet.
Seen in a brochure for hunting exotics in Texas, out of a blind.

Front cover.....
" our hunters must be able to shoot very quickly, off-handed in a moments notice & before the deed "

Page # 1
" Our hunters must shoot void of emotion, with exacting accuracy "

Back cover
" Our corn flingers only contain the best feed laced with pig pheromone, assuring abundant piggy mounting behavior "
