Subject: Ken's Bull
Denny and I chased this bull from before it was light enough to see in the morning in an attempt to size him up. As it got lighter the Elk fed away from us and dropped into a steep canyon but before they left the country we decided to have Denny cow call to the bull who bugled back immediately and the hunt was on.
After waiting a few moments and 1 more cow call the bull bugled back and was inside of 100 yards and closing in on us. We could hear him breathing hard after coming up the canyon then caught a glimpse of his horns pushing through the trees just below our position. The bull skirted the opening I was in where I drew on him but he didn't come out where I thought he might, what a surprise!! I waited for him at full draw to circle into the wind walking around us for another 30 or 40 yards where he stopped once briefly but I had no shot. I could see that if he stayed on that line he would move into a lane where I could shoot. He never stopped again and finally walked into the lane at about a 30 yards where I let the arrow fly.
He went about 20 yards before we could see him again. I couldn't make out his entire body and Denny and I were debating the need for a second shot but before I could he fell head first down the canyon and it was over. He was down about 25 yards from where the arrow hit him.
I can only hope to someday return the favor to Cliff, Denny, Jason, Corky, Tugger and his wife Laura for me helping me on this hunt. I could not have had this success without all of them. I tried a solo hunt before in Ely and came up short, it takes a tribe.
I took him with a Hoyt Trykon XL set at 72 pounds using Carbon Express Max Hunters and a 100 grain 2 blade Rage broad head.
