Black Pepper for Flies

Last year on this site I saw a recipe for a black pepper spray to keep flies off of capes. Last year I lost two capes to maggots. Does anyone have a recipe that I might try?

My recipe is:
-Black Pepper.
Serious, I just use straight black pepper, keep the flies and the hornets off.
-I also salt the cape.

Same here.. Just straight black pepper, hasn't failed me yet.

You will probably think I am nuts but we always use Frank's Hot Sauce, it works better than anything I have ever used before.

straight black pepper for sure. Something that is always in every pack i have. One thing ive found, is that if i have bees at camp and no deer down yet i will take a milk carton and cut 2 slits in it and fill it half way with water and sugar. The slit allows the bees to go in but not get out. Normally it will get rid of the bees within a few days but i make sure at about 1/4-1/2 mile from camp. That way when i hang my deer in camp the bees arent much of a bother. But back to the black pepper. I will use straight black pepper as just about everyone else. but i tend to put it on as soon as the deer is gutted just incase i have to leave and get something back at camp or get help.

Thanks for all the replies, I used straight black pepper last year and still had fly blow. It may have been because I didn't get the pepper on until the morning after and we had really high temperatures and an abnormally high number of flies last year. I really appreciate your help. Good Hunting to all.

Oh and make sure you put a little tape on the black can. Sucks when it opens and your pack is full of pepper and gets in your TP.

Never use "rock salt". Use granular non-iodine salt. Rock salt is not fine enough to adequately penetrate the skin. And, if you don't remove "all" the meat and tissue from the hide it won't matter what type of salt you use the hair will slip.....guaranteed!

Black Pepper will absolutely keep hornets, yellow jackets, bees, and flies off of the meat.

BUT, you have to salt the cape! I do that before I pack it out. I then roll it up and freeze it.

Good luck

And salting the back half of the cape, while the head is still in the cape, will do nothing to save the cape. The face rots, while the back-half is salted. Salting an un-fleshed cape also does not protect it very well. Talk to your taxidermist before going afield.

My dad always used black pepper on deer. It worked ok, but is not fool-proof. I found just boning the meat into tight-weave cotton game bags and tying off the top will keeps the flies out and off better than anything.

hello - here in Arizona we recommend a few things for hides - #1----First get it off the game animal as fast as possible -
#2 ---never salt or pepper it -unless you have takin the time to completly flesh all the meat off!!
#3 -- to protect it - fold and roll- it up IMMEDIATY- flesh side in- and put it in a quality game bag / which will keep flies and dirt etc away from the hide and it will keep it clean when handling- Time should be takin to keep the hair blood free as possible ! wipe your hands off and even take a few minutes to wipe off excessive blood !
#4 -- get it on ice asap in the field - upon arriving at home contact your taxidermist and he'll let you know if you need to frezze it or bring it in! most will tell you to bring it in ASAP!

follow these 4 SIMPLE rules and you'll always have a great hide and won't have to worry about it - plus it's fast and easy and no mess or hazzle!!!

Yes black pepper does work for flies but why mess with it if you don't have too! You'll make your taxidermist happier too!! MM

Eel,
That is what I do, get in game bags asap. I have had so many bee a couple of times in Idaho, getting to that point was tough.
So I use pepper on it just to keep those suckers away.
