I talked to the CO in Idaho today, and he said they got a conviction out of the guys who I saw shoot and leave a buck in So Id. They said they were going to give me $250, so thats better than a kick in the pants. Russ

Washington gives bonus points for the draws, your choice of animal. 10 points. Thats ten years worth of applying. 10 points to the cap of everyone else. Pretty good incentive if you ask me.

Utah will give you the same tag for the animal poached. I would LOVE to catch someone poaching bull elk on the Pahvant....then I could get a tag down there!! :)

I commend you for turning in the poachers!! Too bad you only get $250 but like you said it is better than a kick in the pants

Hey deerlove---maybe I missed a prev. post; what are the details? Where were these guys and what happened?

Thanks for turning them in. Hope the got swatted good for their indiscretion. Hope they'll feel eyes on their backs from know on...

Last year my brother and I shot and missed a 29" monster. Two seconds later the buck was killed by another man. We decided to check it out and congradulate the hunter. When we got to the animal, we measured it and told the guy "way to go". He started acting really strange, he was in a big hurry to get it out of there. We thought this was because he didn't want a battle for it. So we decided to leave and again congradulated him. We knew who the man was, because we live in a small town of 400 or less people. The next morning my brother saw him on the mountain again, packing a gun. So I called the DWR and told them what we had witnessed this kill and told them the mans name. They told me on the phone that he didn't have a license at all! I told them where the kill site was and how big the deer was exactly. I also identified his truck. Ends up the DWR went to where this guy was employed (a ranch about 10 miles away)and found deer and elk killed. The ranch owner was convicted, but the guy we saw kill the deer was not. So, here is where I thought that I would get something for this. It caused a lot of tension in this small town community. The Utah DWR has not given me anything. The elk were killed on a LE area and I didn't see anything. Needless to say, don't expect anything from the DWR, but if I had to do it again I WOULD!!! I don't think this will stop them still in the future, but I will not stand by and see the heard here destroyed by poachers. At least it may save a few.

This happened in 73a a 4pt or bigger area, two guys for Oregon were packed in on top of the mtn. They said they were going to stay the whole week, and it looked like they had the gear to do that. We talked about the regs and they knew the law. I see them opening morning shooting about ten shots. I later find the deer they shot at dead. (A two Point) I found their casings gloves, box of shells. I go up to their camp and there gone. I call the fish cops and they nab them at the trail head. They ended up with like a $1000 fine and suspensed licence for three years. Russ

Ive come to believe its a waste of time to turn in poachers in Arizona.

Some examples why.....

We drove up on a guy in JULY with an elk in the back of his truck. Still a few months before any elk hunts even start. We called AZGFD. 4 1/2 HRS LATER, the guy got himself unstuck. We followed him at a distance back to town............no fish cops.

We once reported a guy that shot a deer with a rifle right at dark during the archery hunt. Must have been his first time because it took him an hour to get him gutted and loaded in the headlights right next to a county maintained road. Once he got him loaded, we followed him to town (30 minute drive) on the only road around..............no fish cop.

Then while working, I reported a guy that shot a deer with his bow on county park land (cant hunt there). The guy looked for his deer all day, then came back the next day to try to find him until nearly dark again.............no fish cop. I did call them a couple times on this one.

Maybe its just me.

You may try "triangulating" law enforcement assets onto poachers if you have problems getting results.

Most often, COs are guys who are paid peanuts and have monstrous areas to patrol. Skimping on pay and personnel for law enforcement seems to be the norm with tight budgets.

Do this: the Forest Service, BLM and the County all have law enforcement officers who you can call and leave a report with. Often these guys will help each other's agencies out during the busy seasons.

By getting all the agencies involved you can get: A)An officer (hopefully more than one) onto these dirt-bags, B)Help build a case file that might link them to a prev. case -or- alert the LE assets so they'll be watching next time.

It's not uncommon to catch these "rings" of poachers that cruise into western states on killing sprees, sometimes they make an annual deal of it. LE officers will watch to see which license plates are "repeat customers" during hunting seasons...

Good luck and feel free to post the poaching SOB's picture on the brag board.! A different kind of "trophy"...!
