Do you guys think archery is worth a try on the Pahvant?

I know that I am in this for the long run just like anyone else. First off I don't want to draw my tag for at least the next three years because I have a bunch of college to still get through up here at Utah State. Guess what I am studying wildlife science, and then will get a masters in wildlife biology. My goal is to make a difference rather than just complaining about what goes on at the state level. I won't have time to hunt my bull for the next few years, so waiting won't kill me or my wallet! However, I do want to hunt a unit like the Pahvant with great bulls that come with a price...time. I am an avid bow hunter and if I decide that I am capable of getting a big bull on the Pahvant with my bow then I may apply for an archery tag.

Number of Tags this year on the Pahvant:

Archery:25 tags( I could draw in 2-4 years)
Early Rifle:21 tags(I could draw in 7+ years)
Later Rifle:32 tags(I could draw in 4-5 years)
Muzzleloader:15 tags (I could draw in 6-8 years)
ALL Seasons:3 tags (I could draw in...well most likely never$$$)

Total number of tags on the Pahvant: 96

Yes a lot of people put in for the Pahvant, but most give up early or move over to another unit with better odds.

I am not discourage to wait for my tag, I will wait.

Do you guys think archery is worth a try on the Pahvant?

Tally to date:

Archery:4 bucks and a coyote
Muzzleloader:two bucks
Rifle:eek:ne buck, two doe and a cow elk

The question to ask is: "Am I a bowhunter or not?". Pahvant is no doubt one of the best LE units and is a consistent big bull producer. As far as bowhunting goes, it has plenty of good opportunity to get in on one of the big boys. I'd say stick with it as it has as good and long a history of producing as any other LE unit. And what with your timetable, I think its a no-brainer. If and when you get the chance to hunt it, if something else shows up thats better, switch over to it cause you can turn in the tag and keep your points.

First consider the dates this is very important, also check to see what the moon is going to do during your hunt and last but not least consider all the freakin rifle hunters and their 1st 2nd 3rd best friends, cousins, lovers, and dogs up every weekend your hunting and the last 5 days of your hunt when the bulls finally start to bugle a little up pushing and scaring away your once in a lifetime oppurtunity to hunt a LE elk in Utah!

Other than that I would say go for it, as long as you can take the last 2 weeks of the hunt off to get it done and you are determined to spend time on a wallow.

If you need to kill an elk do it the easy way and wait your time out and use the rifle, thats what I did after trying to get a tag with my bow for 7 years and thankfully I drew before all these good units started going down hill.
