I was just wondering if anyone, besides myself, hunted Idaho Unit 36A this past season. I would be curious to hear your success, and in my case, your unsuccess stories. I would also like to hear some opinions of this area. PM's are welcome.

I hunted the area a few years back. Didn't see much for deer except a few does, but there were a lot of elk. Ended up leaving and hunting unit 49 with better success.

I hunted 36 and 36b last 2 years. Saw a lot more bucks this year but most were small forkies. Took a small 4x4 last day of my hunt. Drove up the East Fork sightseeing one day didn't see much sign along the road and was too wore out to hike up another hill but the area looked good. I think it might be more of a wintering spot when the snow pushes them out of the hills. Saw my first wild sheep though!

We hunted up East Fork last season. I agree, it is kind of a wintering area. However, if you hit it right with snow, it pushes the deer out of the White Cloud & Boulder Mountains and it can be pretty productive. We saw a ton of forkies and does as well, and I did spot three nice 24" to 27" heavy bucks the last day we were out, but they were too far to get to before dark. We left the next morning as the season was over. If you don't mind me asking, where have you hunted up East Fork? We have hunted all over up at the end of the road, on both sides of the guard station. My brother took a nice 5x4 about 5 years ago. There are some massive drainages, but you really need some horses to get back into them. Anyway, thanks for the reply to my post. Mike

The white clouds had a terrible fire last summer. Much of that area burned. It may be several years before it comes back, but when it does it should be great.

36-a has some good area's in there. I have hunted cow elk in there with wife on the east side. Archery hunt on the west side and have seen some nice bucks in there. Saw a guy couple years ago get a 37" buck with a outfitter. I hunt elk in there archery. Very good unit.

I didn't hunt up there but took a slow sightseeing, roadhunting, scouting ride up to the gate. Did most of my hunting above Clayton along the main river and needed a break from hiking those hills. Quite a change in terrain on the East Fork from upriver and those sage brush hills I looked good. Maybe next year I'll hike up one and spend a day glassing. Does it ever snow enough during the general season to push the biggeg deer down that far?
