LAST EDITED ON Dec-28-05 AT 08:54PM (MST)[p]At the first of the month some neighbors were moving to their new home. That day I noticed that they had a nice moose antlers in their carport and tall 4X4 muley as well. Thinking how cool that was to have a couple of nice antlers I was amazed that they just left them in the carport. The next day they were back moving more stuff and when they left the antlers were still in their carport. Then no one for the next four days. I wanted to ask them what they were going to do with the antlers but the chance never came. THEN on my way home from work the antlers were on top of their garbage. I TOOK THEM. What would you have done?? I will post them after I hear back from a couple of you.

Why the hell wouldn't you take them? You shouldnt feel bad at all. I would have taken them even if they left them in their garage if I knew they had moved already. Its not stealing. I wanna see what they look like. GOOD JOB.

I would've asked them about the antlers as soon as I saw them. And sitting on the garbage, I wouldn't of hesitated to snatch them up.

I think once garbage is on the street it becomes public???? I probably would have taken them as well, especially if they were a nice set.

Dont lose any sleep over that. In fact, pop open a cool one tonight, you deserve it for saving those antlers from the landfill.

I second what Sonora said. You saved them from a horrible death! Good job on the rescue. It will be interesting to see what people have to say. I for one rescue road kill antlers also. How many guys will admit to one and not the other? Wonder if people will be ok with one and not the other...

I would have approached them first. It isn't yours to take regardless of where they are. If I didn't have their permission I would not have taken them. Sounds a little like neighborhood shed hunting??LOL! Just my opinion.

Law enforcement and the media search through trash bins set out on the street all the time. I don't remember the title of the U.S. Supreme Court case, but garbage on the street is free game.

Sneak,
Last time I looked it was still illegal to swipe the headgear off of roadkill, but what can I expect from a R3 guy??

Rut

I think it is illegal from roadkill but it should be a crime to let a nice rack go to waste in any circumstance. I would have taken the garbage also.

I should have known HEEFMAN was from Oregon by the comments about search and seizure. HA HA.. I woulda snagged them also.

Rutt,

hey, it's goes with the territory. If I am going to help the traveling public by dragging one of those bleeding, mangled things from the roadway, I'm going to honor what's left. Just because it's body was wasted doesn't mean it's head-gear needs to be. Have I told you lately how glad I am to be rid of your bro? :D

I'm amazed you Oregon boys follow the legalalities of taking someone's trash. You are right, here in liberal land of Oregon, even if trash is on the street police need a search warrant to go through it. If you folks are wondering why cops go through garbage here in our great state it is to find methamphetamine labs.

I'll be damn! Oregon is more bent wrist liberal then California. Here we follow the supreme court case that once the items are put in the garbage container and set out for pickup, it's a free shot on search & seizure without a warrant needed. We also do wire taps on the local level, the Feds are no longer the only ones to enjoy that. Though it does require reasonable suspicion of crime acitivty to obtain the warrant for the wiretap.
Oregon is not only liberal, Eugene appears to be the hotbed for breeding homegrown environmental terrorists. Maybe we moved enought of them out of Berkley to Oregon.

Good on ya man...one of my sons would have beaten me to it. I am more curious on the fact that you had a neighbor with some headgear and potentially the same passion as MM members, and you didn't know it. I once lived in a neighborhood outside DC, lived accrossed from a well know buisness man. After 4 years of living there with just hand waves between us; come to find out he fished on a large boat in the bay for strippers, by himself. Some might have thought it was by choice to fish alone as we all need that time either in the woods or in the stream alone. After spending some time with this guy on his boat catching several strippers; come to find out no other neighbor ever talked to him either. If the guy that lived on the other side of me would have talk to him rather than always joke about how much he worked, he too could have enjoyed a couple fishing trips on a boat rather than on the shore. There is a chance that those antlers have a good story behind them.

You never know, maybe they were not supposed to be there and got there by mistake. Maybe the husband told his wife to put them in the garage and she thought he said garbage. Never hurts to ask. I would let them know I grabbed them.

The former neighbors came by and asked if I had the antlers from his carport. I told him yes and was ready to hand them over when he said that they were for me in the first place. I was supposed to have them the whole time. His daughter forgot to tell me that they were in the carport and I was welcome to them. His wife thought that I didn't want them and put them on top of the trash pile THAT pissed the husband off .The moose was the smallest of his three and the deer was the smaleest of his five. WHEW..... Pictures next week when I get back from Vegas.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-01-06 AT 11:03PM (MST)[p]Wow, I was somewhat right eh?
Assumptions and speculations. Now women don't do that do they?

I'll stop there.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-06 AT 03:14PM (MST)[p]it funny what you find about people next door, A couple of year ago I was practicing elk calling(Bugling) and from up the street(So.Cal) I get a answer, I Find out that he hunts in a couple of the same States I do. I only wave to him a few times before that, now we see each other and stop and talk about hunting.Glad you got to keep the Horns

ewiltanger, how do you fish for strippers? With one dollar bills in your teeth? Haahaaaaaaa...
You did the right thing by snagging them!
In Wa. the penalty for "picking up" antlers off of roadkill is $2,000 and $6,000 if they are 4 pt or better. Not worth the risk in my book.

Looks like possible E-Bay material??? LOL

Not a bad buck. I'd have grabbed them too!
Congrats on finding bone right in the neighborhood...

Personally, (especially now that I've seen the pics) I would have left them right there in the garbage. Sorry dude, but I've got enough of my own junk, last thing I need is someone elses.

arch,
You asked what I would do? You are the one that asked and I told ya what I would do. If salvaging other peoples trash floats your boat, more power to ya. For me, those antlers don't excite me enough to pick through the neighbors garbage.

I'm sure he aint a dumpster diver. He seen a nice rack which in my mind it is.I'd would have done the same thing because it has a damn good story behind it.How could anybody throw a deer rack away.I still have my first spike I killed when I was 14 yrs old hangin up.I'm still just as proud of that buck as any of the others I've killed.Just my 2 cents worth............Troy
