Would this bull be legal on a spike only unit?

Cant quite see the other side. But if it has just one point on the left side then I would say that its a legal spike under the rules.

I had the same thing a few years ago. the fish and game officer up there told us we could shoot him but if we care about conservation we would not shoot him. the only branch I see on that bull occurs below the tip of the ear when it is straight up so I would say yes.

Geeze, cowkiller, you greedy son of a gun you. You already killed a great bull. Leave some for the rest of us! :)

No way, sorry cowslayer!
That bull is clearly broken off and is a mature trophy bull, i can even see he has a G1.
No genetic freak 6x1 there!

Even if you were to get away with it legally, that shows "failure" in the system just like the management bull hunts were where hunters were killing young 5x5's instead of mature genetic flawed 5x6 bulls.

Let him walk and feel good about it :)

busted or not, the question was is it legal, and I think it is. I saw a 350 class bull shot on the fish-lake a few years ago that had busted the main beam in a similar position. He was considered a spike.

Not saying you should shoot it, but it would be hard to pass for someone who has been applying for 10 plus years and can't draw a tag. Might be the only opportunity they have to take a brached bull in this state.

Pass him if you can, I understand if you can't.

Geez stinky, CS didn't say he was even thinking about shooting it, he just asked a harmless question. I wouldn't take it but I have seen bulls like that and have wondered the same question. Just out of curiosity thats all. I think the same goes for CS. Throttle back just a tad. :)

We all know Cowslayer was not just asking our thoughts...He is planning to kill that elk. Cowslayer you PUNK. How could you do that? :)

LAST EDITED ON Oct-06-09 AT 11:44AM (MST)[p]YOU CAN NOT KILL A BULL WITH EYEGUARDS AND THAT BULL HAS THEM!!!!

Archery is a year round commitment!!

in the regs it says nothing about eye guards. It says anything with that does not branch above the tip of the ear. If he wanted to shoot the elk he could.

The goal of the spike hunt is to increase opportunity, it is NOT a management hunt. I say shoot it. I would rather see someone take a broken mature "6 x spike" than a yearling spike. But then again, I don't agree with the spike hunts in the first place, so that is just my opinion.

It is legal to shoot in a spike only unit, given it doesn't branch above the ear (hard to tell from the pic).

I seen a bull just like that up Red Creek last year, I was wondering hte same thing. My opinion; if its questionable, dont shoot it, I passed on him last year (would have been a very easy shot)... it was a very hard thing to do.

If he is broken I would probably pass on him, if he is a freak, I would dump him and get him out of the gene pool. I have seen many like that genetically and they need to be removed IMO.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-07-09 AT 10:16PM (MST)[p]I may have shot his bull last weekend. He was on a open unit. Can't tell from the picture for sure. But the bull that I shot was busted ont that side. He has the G1 but his horn was all messed up. He is buster on his sword and his G2 on the good side. He had been shot with a bow and had been gouged in the head by another bull the night before I shot him. If this is the same bull he was a mean mother.
Just took another look and it is not the same bull.

LOL at all the guys pretending that one guy shooting or not shooting a Bull makes a lick of difference in the gene pool. If you are on public land and don't shoot it, most likely somebody else will.

Marly, thats a legal spike "not more than 1 point branching above the ears as far as the it can't have eyegurads comment those don't count they aren't above the ears "duh" unless they turn up and above the ears like a real toad would!

Tony,

It is a proven Biological strategy for whitetails to shoot the genetically inferior animals. Guess it makes no difference in elk huh?

Yeah it works great on private land, not so much on giant pieces of public land.

Also, there are some new findings coming from a very large study done by Texas A&M on Whitetails that show some of the normal harvest practices don't always work like we think they do, just some food for thought.

shoot those ugly freak bulls! I love it when guys get excited about those things! get them out of the gene pool! I have a head I picked up in az that the strong side measures 182" the other sides just a goofy crazy looking 6. and I pick up similar looking sheds every year in the area! yes it matters! shoot those bulls!

Good to know Tony, is that study published publicly yet? I would like to read it.

While I do think it benefits to get rid of the dang freaks, it is possibly a trait carried by the cows too. I know it is nearly impossible to "shoot out" bad or good genetics.

Either way if he is a freak and not a broken bull, I am going to dump him.
