Freezer Trouble!

I just found out the my neighbor's freezer where I have my meat is not working. It is in an uninsulated garage in Missoula, where the daytime temps. have hovered in the 30's and it has been a bit colder at night. The outer parts are a bit soft, but it is still pretty frozen in the center; the ones that felt to soft I already chucked. I am not sure how long it has been like this, but I figure if the centers are still frozen then it can't have been that long. I would just like to know if anyone has any advise, is it safe to risk it. I really don't want all of my meat to go to waste. Please help.

IF IT'S STILL FROZE IN THE MIDDLE YOUR O.K.!!!

THE MORE UN THAWED MEAT, I'D EAT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN & START GIVING IT AWAY!!!

GIVING IT AWAY BEATS THE HELL OUT OF WASTING IT!!!

I HATE TO HEAR OF NEWS LIKE THAT!!!

IT'S A FEAR WE ALL HAVE!!!

THE NEWER THE FREEZER THE BIGGER POS IT IS!!!

MY FREEZER WAS WILLED TO MY WIFE,IT WAS BOUGHT IN THE LATE 40'S,THE WALLS OF THE FREEZER ARE 5" THICK,IT'S STILL PURRING(KNOCK ON WOOD!!!)LIKE NO OTHER ITEM I'VE EVER OWNED,I'VE OWNED IT FOR OVER 20 YEARS MYSELF!!!

DO YOU ALL THINK I SHOULD BE PI$$ED WHEN IT BLOWS???

IT HAS MY SONS BULL ELK MEAT IN IT & I JUST GOT A 1/2 OF BEEF,GOD I HOPE IT DOESN'T BLOW WHILE IT'S FULL!!!

THE ONLY bobcat GUARANTEEING THEY DON'T BUILD EM LIKE THEY USED TOO!!!

Well if it is 30 degrees out and the center is still frozen you should be fine. Smell the outter meat and if it smells spoiled at all toss it.. if not, eat it, give it away, or go get some dry ice and re freeze it until you can get another freezer. Good luck.

get to cooking the stuff that seems thawed , then you can re freeze it after its cooked if you cant eat it all , or smoke it , sounds like is cold enough , dont open the broken freezer and it will stay cold longer ,,, get out ice chests , call more friends , rent a meat locker ,,,, anything but throwing it away , i just hate to hear about wasted meat :(

LAST EDITED ON Jan-01-06 AT 08:19PM (MST)[p]I feel for ya man! If it is still mostly frozen, it should be ok. This summer my "game" freezer went t!ts up on me. I lost aprox 150+ lbs or salmon and steelhead, 40-50 lbs of halibut and 90-110 lbs of deer and elk. I wound up with a ton of coyote and crab bait. I now own the largest upright and the largest chest freezers available. My buddy and I made an alarm that sounds if the temp inside the freezer rises above 0?F.
It makes ya sick to look at all of that wasted grub! I did wind up shooting about a dozen coyotes off of the stuff though! HAahaaaaaa........
Bessy.... Un-thaw? That would be to re-freeze. My wife says that a lot and I nail her on it every time! Haahaaa...

Thank for the advice you guys. I went ahead and cook up some of the steaks tonight to see how they were. Smelled and tasted good, so I guess we'll see. I also started a batch of jerky to try to use some more up. Thats a ton of meat Polarbear, sorry to hear about that. That must of been a heartbreaker to have to give up all that hard earned meat.

If the outside is soft and the middle is still frozen I would just refreeze it. When you thaw it out in the future to eat, I think that the chances of it still smelling good is pretty high.
