montana landowner preference

now,
the long thread I saw today got me thinking about this.
I know montana has landowner preference, but does anyone know how it works?? I am a non resident, I own a house there in a small town, and my family has a few hundred acres in the same area, does anyone know what kind of preference or tag I can get, I read up a little in the regs book, but it just basically said to call the helena office for more info, just wondering if anyone takes advantage of this,

Landowner needs to sign up with MFWP and local game warden, then provide you with that required documentation prior to your submittal of your non-res/landowner application before March 15th. It is really easy and available on-line. The big thing is that you must hunt on the property. The local gammies know when you are there and will check on you and the landowner!!

missinMT,
Has it right. You can only hunt the deeded land of the land owner using landowner sponsored tags. No BLM, State land, forest service land or neighboring ranches are available to you.

Call Marsha at the Hdqts in Helena at 406-444-1666 and she can explain it to you and answer more questions if need be, good luck.

easternmontana....what little town do you have the property in.....if ya don't mind me askin'?

Melstone, love it there, only get out a little in the summer, and usually hunting season, my dad lives a little east of town,
it's great and I love the people, wish it wasnt so far away though, I live in a similar sized town in California (AROUND 200) in the mountains, we have 6 generations in this county, but development and yuppies creep closer everyday, and our way of life which has been slowly fading for years, is now quickly eroding, it's just sad to have to leave a place where you have so many ties and history,

I think there is a minimum acerage requirement as well. I think it used to be 180ac for deer and 640 for elk, but I'm not so sure they didn't raise it for deer...

I think you have to have a section of ground, 640 acres. And the gameys dont know when your there. How would they know when you take vacation and go back. You dont have to put the dates down on your app when you will be back there. Ive did it a couple times and have never seen a gamey.

its a quarter section for deer, which my family has, or a section for elk, and proof that elk frequent the area, the fortunate thing , though, is that my landownership does help in the antelope draw, though it sucks, because I have to apply for the area I own land in to get preference, and I hunt right across the river which is a quarter mile away,

There is a difference between land owner preference and land owner sponsored tags. If you are on a sponsored tag then the fish cops are aware of when you are there and will check you. On a land owner preference you just have increased odds of drawing a general tag. At least that is the way I understand it. As a resident I use land owner preference every year in the Antelope draw but I don't need a land owner sponsored tag. My landowner preference tag allows me to hunt even off the deeded land vs. landowner sponsored which is only good for deeded land.

yes, I am just using land owner preference for the draw. I know a few people whom have large quantities of land, whom if I really wanted a land owner sponsered tag, I could use, but instead would rather have a general tag,

Only problem, I own land in 590, and I want to hunt antelope in 700, so no preference in antelope, unless I use my dads, landowners preference which you can do,

Anyone with questions should email marsha ogle, she is most helpful,

I believe for a landowner sponsored license the landowner must have at least 640 acres and since the license holder can hunt any time during the season I don't believe there is any way Fish & Game agents would know you are hunting unless they happen to come to the ranch when you are hunting. I wouldn't have anything to hide, but any extra human presence could screw up your hunt. Good luck for 2006!

no its 640 for elk, 160 for deer, for a land owner sponsered tag,

I am talking about land owner preference for daws, which is a little different beast entirely,

If I wanted to do that for deer I could, BUT I dont want to hunt just that land, IF it was all hay fields, 160 would be adequate, but 160 acres of timber and sage, isnt in my mind, though we see some deer around,
