LAST EDITED ON Oct-07-09 AT 11:20AM (MST)[p]Thought I'd start a new post for my #2000. I was wondering why nobody will post photos of their "spikes"..
My son was able to take his first spike bull on the opening day and in my experience, the first elk is usually one of the most memorable. He was as excited and happy as if it was a big ol' stinky mature bull.
Anyway, here is his and the smile tells the whole story!

Post em up guys!

He even built the log teepee out in the middle of the meadow to shade the bull while waiting for us to come pack it out. He would move his coats around with the sun to keep him shaded.. Pretty funny!

Congratulations to your son. Here in NM that would be a Mature Bull.

"Mature Bull Elk (MB)
A male elk with at least one brow tine extending six or more inches from the main beam or at least one forked antler with both branches six or more inches long."

Very Good,

Great job! Thanks for posting the pics! I've got a spike tag and we're headed out tomorrow to the Books for my first chance at an elk as well.

Now that our archery season is closed I can only shoot spikes. I am praying to find one now!!! Nice job.

Great job on a fine young bull. Not everyone is hunting big antlers. Some exceptional eating there.

Nice Job Rick!!! I think Chet is super excited!!! GOOD FOR HIM!!

I am not ashamed to post pics of my spike either!!! I had a GREAT time up on the Mtn chasing spikes around. It was a time that I got to spend with my Dad and my Brother and make memories that will last a lifetime! I am going to get out every chance I can..and it that means out chasing spikes....then I am going to do it!! Plus, they are great to eat!!!! YUMMY!

SO.....I will post a few pics of my spike!!

Great job by the hunter, I love seeing the young guys being successful and how happy / appreciative they are to harvest an elk, be it a spike or otherwise. No shame in that at all, just the thought of some elk steaks off of that spike are making my mouth water....yum!

BTW, the fact that he built a log teepee and moved his coat around to shade his bull is just priceless, what a great young man and story to remember!

I truly believe that a first elk, especially by the youth, is
more exciting to them than a seasoned hunter shooting a 350"
bull. The smile says it all!

Congrats again to your son Rick. Those hunts are some of the most memorable hunts for me. No pressure to kill something big, enjoying good food family and friends and just being in the outdoors. Don't get me wrong, I love chasing the big boys but sometimes it's just nice to get out there and just shoot something.

FLEH - I knew there was something wrong with your hat....you and slammy must have hit your head on a rock somewhere along the lines, I mean come on. . . DENVER????:D

It's always an adventure!!!

No shame in shooting a spike. Way to go boys!

Here's a spike of mine from last year's archery hunt.

Thanks for the pics guys. I love spikes..... Call me nuts but I think I would rather shoot a spike than a small rag horn...
