The end results of my Wyoming elk Hunt:

I hunted very hard for nine days archery. Had a blast but no elk. I took my nephew from Louisiana and called several small bulls into spitting distance from him. I could not get within bow range of the bigger bulls no matter how hard I tried.

Went back for the rifle opener and took this bull about 12:00 on opening day. It is my biggest bull to date and about the biggest I could hope for in this unit.

Two funny side notes!

1. I had a group of guys tell me that is was worthless to hunt in the middle of the day. They actually laughed at me end tried to explain "how we hunt elk in Wyoming". I knew where the elk had bedded down. I simply stalked into range and shot him as he was trying to sneak away from his bed. The look on their faces was priceless when I drove out that night with my bull.

2. Butcher found a bullet in the bull from a few years aback. It preformed perfectly with a great mushroom but did not enter the boiler room. I took the bull with a .257 Weatherby and a 115 Barnes TSX. Shot placement was the key. He took a few steps and fell over.

That is a great bull and a good scoring bull at that. We've called in many bulls in the middle of the day. You just need to move into their bedding areas and give a call. Is that a shed horn I see in the first picture? Did you have the bull scored?? Thanks for the post.

Fine looking bull. Will make a great mount if you choose to go that route.

Congrats.

My hunting spot is so secret, not even the elk have found it yet.

The shed is a funny story...

Every year I step on a shed while hunting. I never find sheds while hunting. I am always looking for animals and end up stepping (usually tripping) on a shed. It is a small three point shed I found about 1/2 hour before I shot my bull. It was one of if not the first shed I have ever found while hunting. My friends just always laugh at me as I trip and they pick up the shed I tripped on.

The bull scores a little over 344. Short main beams but he makes up for it in tine length.

Very nice bull. Is that a handload for the .257? Do you know what muzzle velocity you get?

Very nice bull don't get much better for that unit.
Congrats bet opening day was cold it was for us anyway the wind never did let up we seen bulls out all day long last Thursday.

That looks like a really nice bull. I hunted the same unit as you and got a little lucky over labor day weekend and killed a big heavy 5x5 here are some pictures he goes around 320. I have been wondering if the archery hunt would get better as time passed, but I couldn't pass this big 5 up and I didn't want to go to the rifle hunt.

I saw a five that looked a lot like that one. I drew on him and needed him to stop so I could make the shot. He walked into my shooting lane then turned away and never stopped. That was the only time I thought I had a great shot at a bigger bull. That is a beautiful elk and I would love to get an elk like that with a bow.

Was the archery hunt any better towards the end of Sept. I know over labor day they were quite until Sunday night and then they were screaming on Monday morning and that is when I killed mine. My brother called him into 20 yards for the first shot and then stopped him agine at 35 yards and I stuck him agine it was pritty cool and he is the biggest bull I have ever had an oppertunity at. At first I thought I might have screwed up shooting a 5 point that early but I am way happy with him I love the mass and the dark horns.

Great couple of bulls!

"1. I had a group of guys tell me that is was worthless to hunt in the middle of the day. They actually laughed at me end tried to explain "how we hunt elk in Wyoming"."

That is not how some of us Wyomingites hunt. Hunting during the day can be productive if you do it right.

Great bull buddy. Thanks again for letting me tag along...and for all those sheds you trip over. Sorry I wasn't there for the harvest. Great bull!!!

Hey don't you know that little .257 can't kill an Elk! ;-)

Great job man, that's a super Bull!!

Tony,
I knew a guy in Montana years ago that all he hunted with was his 6mm with a 28" barrel....got his Elk every year with it. Said that is the only rifle he owned and never had failed him yet back then.

I did not see any oil rigs or chopers during my hunt but I stayed away from 4 J and Pine mountain for the most part.

That's a great "High-Noon" bull!

What distance were you from the bull when you took him?

Thanks.
