Deseret Land and Livestock Bull

Just back from hunting elk on Deseret Land and Livestock. This would not normally be my type of hunt......Way out of my means, and most that know me would say that I'm more of a do-it-yourselfer, but my Dad very generously bought this hunt for me at the RMEF banquet this spring and I wasn't going to argue.

Something like that is a bit out of character for the old man, as I'm fairly certain that in my entire life he has never so much as handed me a five dollar bill. He was all about working for what you have, and for teaching me that I am very grateful. I guess he finally decided that I have learned enough though, and so he surprised me with this hunt on the condition that he could come along for the ride. I wouldn't have had it any other way.

We hunted hard, passed some bulls that were much better than this one (in fact a bunch of bulls that were better), messed up on a REAL big one, had a great time, and ended up taking this good looking bull on the last afternoon of the hunt. He came in screaming to our cow calls, stood broadside at 60 yards, and took three perfect shots to the chest like a champ before tumbling down the steep slope. Wow! Tough animals!

One of the most memorable hunts of my life, and I'm glad to have shared it with my old man. Love ya Dad, and thanks for a great hunt!

What a wonderful gift! Hunting elk with your Dad! That is what it is all about. Congrats on a great bull and a memory you will keep forever. Great bull. You have had a great year for sure!

Would you have your dad call my dad and give him a talking to:) Looks like a really fun hunt and good company!! Congrats on the bull!!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-08-09 AT 01:55PM (MST)[p]Great post Preston! What a great time. It's all about family. As I get older I have realized that its not the trophy on the wall but the memories that are important. The trophy just helps bring back those memories. Congratulations on the great bull and having the opportunity to share the hunt with your Dad. I hold the memories of hunting with my Dad close to my heart.

I hope we share many more hunts together.

Blaine

It was a great experience. Nice accomidations, knowledgable guides, great food, and tons and tons of elk. We probably saw 30 plus bulls every single day, maybe more.

The best part is that they truly run their CWMU in the manner they are intended. We didn't draw the tag, but the state draw hunters get the same hunt the paying clients get including being guided, fed, lodged, having the animal packed out and everything else, all for the low low price of ZERO dollars if you are lucky enough to draw the tag.

There were paying clients and state guys all in camp together and they all had equally quality hunts. State guys bull's were just as big.

This is a big deal in my mind, because alot of CWMU's don't offer the same hunt to state guys as they do paying guys, and the fact that DL&L does says alot about the quality of their operation.

Thanks Blaine. I sure missed hunting with you and your family this year. Next year we'll be sure to be up there pestering you a little more.

Great bull and you are dead on about DL&L. Every CWMU should operate as they do. For those of you in Utah, I'll have a story on CWMU's and some new information hunters will want to know about on this Saturday's Roughin' It Outdoors (Saturday at 11:00 p.m.) Brett is a great guy and even better guide. Glad to see you came away with some great memories!

you will never top that bull unless you do the same for your son...

All of my greatest accomplishments, I have been blessed to have had my father with me, those are the trophies!!!!

congrats!!!

Great bull! One of those tags sold at the Orem SFW banquet during the live auction last year for only 7K! Sometimes you can't put a price tag on a hunt like that though, can you.

Very nice bull and a even better story, I wish all the CWMU's was ran all the same.(even If I can't draw being a NR)That would be a big WOW.Some like DLL have the balls to do it right, some of the other operators don't even have a clue.

The biggest challenge in hunting with Preston is trying to keep up! I suppose I should clarify on the 'Brett' thing. There are 2 of us that have been hanging around up there for a lot of years. I met the other Brett up on the mountain in '95 I think. He works with Bucks and Bulls and I guide for the ranch itself.

Preston and his Dad are great hunters. All I had to do was show them around and help judge bulls. We covered a lot of ground and had a lot of fun. The big one did get away. They are still wild elk and the wind will get you especially when there are 15 or so cows with nothing better to do than bust would-be shooters. They also will go far when you get too close. Thanks again gentlemen for a fun hunt.

Congratulations on the hunt of a lifetime. You certainly took a beautiful bull, but the best part of the hunt, I'm sure, was sharing it with your dad. Neither of you will ever forget those magical days.
