Beaver Unit Report

The end results of my Limited Entry Rifle hunt were spectacular
because i had great hard working guides and the man upstairs was watching over us and gave us a bit of Luck.

In six days of hard hunting there were very few bulls talking and not many mature bulls being spotted (350) plus type bulls.

I only saw one other bull other than the bull i harvested over 350 and from the reports of the other guides and hunters it was very tough hunting.

All in all the quantity of elk was very low and there were not the big bulls around on this unit that had been in the past .

I heard in 2006 of one hunter passing 6 bulls over 350 in one day....

Both my guide Eric and Gooch both commented on how the truly big bulls on the unit had either been killed off the unit migrated off the unit or were just plain nocturnal.

Based upon all the summer scouting ,trail cams and spotters we had out over the course of the summer it looks like the unit has been harvested pretty hard on its top end bulls.

I know the tags on the unit were cut back this year and now i understand why.

It was a hunt of a lifetime for me but based upon my observations the future elk hunts on the Beaver unit are going to be harder and harder, especially for the 350 plus type bulls.

I am one lucky man to have killed a bull of a lifetime i am just glad i had the opportunity in 2009....

Thanks for the info Randy and congrats again on your 2009 bull!! My odds of drawing an archery tag down there next year looks great but I'm still trying to decide what unit to go after...I want to use my elk points up and start building deer points instead but Beaver would be a fairly easy draw and that's what I'm leaning towards...maybe Fishlake or up by Flaming Gorge too?? Anyways thanks for the info much appreciated!!

I would do my home work on the units the archery hunt was brutally tough...

Utah just doesnt give the archery hunter a quality time frame to hunt within. Arizona does and New Mexico but not Utah.

I have archery hunted in the prime states when the rut is kickin and thers nothing better i mean nothing !!!!!

From what i heard first hand there were a lot of very capable archery hunters hunting UTAH that were dissapointed this year due to lack of the rut ,the heat and moon phases.

Good Luck on your Quest...

Huh? I guess they really did head to the Dutton after all. I guess I just prayed more than you.................. and lit a few more fires than you did lol.

Seriously though, the rut wasn't what I expected and only happened to be hot on 2 separate days. However, we were able to spot many bulls at the 350 mark. We even passed several bulls over that mark. I guess if score were the factor I shot a lesser bull (353 broken). However the overall look of my bull was that of a dinosaur. I can't help but to think however is you aren't posting this trying to keep pressure down on the beaver tags for next year????? J/K! I'm sorry I spent so much time pine hen hunting on the beaver before my hunt but it appears my efforts paid off big time. LOL. I still owe you a steak, I know!

Wow,
Not my experience on the Beaver Unit AT ALL! I archery hunted this year and found 350+ bulls while scouting and hunting. I even located a couple of those ?super bulls? like BULLMANIA took. (Well done by the way)
I only hunted 6 days before I took my bull and I was on quality elk literally EVERY DAY! In fact, I couldn't get to my ?A? area because of all the action I was having in one of my ?back up? spots!
While I did scout and hunt solo, I got a TON of help from MM members, locals, and Guides. (Gooch?s guides were especially courteous, and genuinely helpful. A big thanks to Eric and Daniel!)
This is a tough unit, and the bulls are in bachelor herds in the thickest steepest areas during the bow hunt. There is some beautiful camping and meadows up on top, but if you plan on hunting this terrain, prepare for disappointment.
If you are in shape and willing to bivy in, I would HIGHLY recommend this unit with archery tackle. This was THE best hunt I have ever been on. More quality animals, more action, and too much damn fun! The only down side of this hunt was knowing I will most likely never draw another quality Utah elk tag.
