January Huntin' Fool

Got mine a few days ago. not much new from last year other than Wyoming's point fees and we knew that already.

Huntin' Fool??
This publication is so overrated; I really think it is one of the worst hunter info sources out there. Back in its beginning it was great, but now,????????? I don't put any stock in his magazine

Nothing can destroy your chances of being drawn for a sleeper area faster than for Garth Carter to get wind of it.

I recieved mine a few days ago. I'm a pretty new subscriber and am enjoying the Magazine. The stats are nice. Alot of the leg work seems to be done, it keeps me from spending hours on the internet, or flipping through different publications.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-07-06 AT 09:50PM (MST)[p]It's a tool, not a Bible. One has to look at there own preferences (draw odds, horses/terrain, public/private, trophy size, etc). I'm also not in favor of the whole landowner tag fiasco they are part of. But if they didn't create the magazine and tag broker thing someone else would have. I like Eastman's Jounal for other reasons, but their whole member research section is an insult to my intelligence. It's pretty obvious NW CO is a good place for elk (if you have 15 points), and the strip is a good spot for deer (if you can draw in your lifetime), and they'll keep recommending G&H as long as High Country Mule Deer's still in print (Not that I didn't enjoy the book). The fact of the matter is that there is too much demand for quality animals, and our hunting heritage is on a slippery downslope to the European way of hunting. In the end, hunter's themselves will be the destruction of our sport within this century.

The artical on pages 44 & 45 caught my eyes, since I know both of them. The guy with the wide 4 pointer and I use to work together 31 years ago and have met his partner a couple of times at functions. We all worked for the same company and I think they still do. Haven't talked with Gary in about 4 years but they are a couple of "hunting fools".

COSA, .... TRUER WORDS WERE NEVER SPOKEN. I HAVE TO DO HUNTING HOMEWORK EVERY DAY TO PUT 2-3 HUNTS TOGATHER A YEAR. BETWEEN POINTS, RESEARCH, TELEPHONE CALLS, WADEING THROUGH THE HYPE, TAG PIMPS, THE GARTH CARTERS OF THE WORLD,POINT CREEP,EVER CHANGING REGULATIONS,DROUGHT, NO SNOW FOR THE MIGRATION,THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN THE DRAW, POACHERS,PRIVATE PROPERTY, AND PEOPLE WANTING TO SHOOT MY QUAD, I STILL GET IT DONE. I THINK YOU WILL SEE ALOT OF HUNTERS FALL OUT OF THE SPORT REAL SOON DUE TO MANY $$$$$$ FACTORS, OR ONLY HUNT THERE HOME STATE. BUT ITS STILL ALOT OF FUN....... YD.

The link is huntinfool.com.

I was reminded of a sore point on page 21 where it lists the number of tags for each states Governor, Commissioner and Conservation tags.

Utah has a list of conservation tags a mile long. B&C got 1 tag, 80 tags to the MDF, 7 to the NWTF, 21 tags to the RMEF, 18 tags to the SCI, and 51 to the SFH. 178 or so premium tags and growing every year.

Huntin' Fool has to much general info to spend $100.00 bucks on for me that is...

The glory days of trophy hunting on public land are way long gone, unless you have a big bank account, Its hard being addicted to something and not have enough money to do it anymore?I'm far beyond getting any satisfaction from shooting dinks, so save your money and go on a quality hunt every few years is my new motto??.

I'm with you COSA. It can be very useful if you use it the right way. If you are going to use his "top picks" or the "sleeper units", save your money. For me, it is well worth the $100. Its a good starting point to find a unit and then do some of your own research.

I did this for 20 years BEFORE I found this. I just use it as a reference but even with the BS and landowner tag stuff...etc it is still the best $100 anybody could spend to hunt in the west.

Nothing out there is perfect. I am not sure why we as hunters have to look at everything as BAD. Sure, Garth and some of the things they do are not what I would do but that is life.

In general they provide a great service for some folks that don't have time to do this for themselves.

My only issue is that they point folks to areas that used to not even get looked at. Had that experience this past fall. But, that is life.

Try to look at the good side,

Archer

As others I too look at it as just another tool. Challenge is to be a couple years ahead of the curve. In '89 my brother (had 1st shot) killed a 34" mainframe mule deer that scored about 206 gross NT. Area is never mentioned, not as good as then but still a few big ones there. In '97 I took a 190 net (nets are for fishermen) that was not mentioned but was the next year. 2 years ago I saw 3, 28-32" bucks during a muzzy hunt(couldn't get close enough and one was a hog) in an area that is never mentioned. All on public lands. Just got to do homework and use as many sources of info as possible.

It only takes one good lead to get you in the right place at the right time, I look at everything and talk to everyone. It is just one more source to look through.....
