Nasty Rumor ??

I hope! This rumor has started and is going around - just heard it today. Can anyone confirm it, put it to rest, shed any light on how it got started, etc???

Apparently last night Oct 13th the DWR had a meeting with the / a Cattlemen's Association. Now I don't know if that is a local chapter or the Utah Cattlemen's Association. Part of the out come of that meeting -it is alledged, is that at least a portion of the Central Mountains Manti which has been a limited entry for Any Bull tags, would become an open any bull unit. Specifically the Twelve Mile area.

Sorry to be vague, but that is all the info I have. I'd really like to find out just where this stands, any help please!

It would be nice to have an any bull area in the middle or southern part of the state somewhere. The only "any bull" areas are either wastelands void of elk or heavily private.

I just called and spoke with two different people at the DWR, both of which said they knew nothing or have not heard anything about this proposal.

Though the two of them weren't actually at the meeting, I was able to leave a voice message with someone who was. Once he returns my call, I am sure I will have some more details which I will share.

As of now, It doesn't sound likely.

"Hunt hard or go home!"

I know that the DWR will be making an attempt to increase elk herds, but they will need the help of folks like the cattlemen. They hope to maybe provide some appropriate permitees and landowners with tags they can use or sell in order to increase elk numbers and then increase the number of public drawing tags available to hunters as the number of elk increase in a given area.

Tree you think it would be a good thing to give PUBLIC tags to cattlemens associations so they can sell that public resource to fund their public land grazing biz?? Hell they already get subsidies out the A$$ now they want tag money also?? That is a horrible thing, and I think they should have NO say at all about herd objectives.. Thousands of hunters should not have to bow down to a few public land ranchers.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-15-09 AT 05:03PM (MST)[p]there is always lots of back slapping and get'n on your knees behind closed doors when politics or a big deal going down about our wildlife in Utah. I'm sure if it did happen it will be for the good of the general public hunter but it will also give a few cattlemen something they don't deserve.

kind of reminds me of Team America when Spottswoode says Gary you want to become a team player don't you? Gary says yes! Spottswoode says then get down on your knees quick nobody is looking. LOL
Then later Spottswoode comes out and tells everyone how Gary got down on his knees to become a team player. LOL

Maybe I missed the part that stated that they were giving a bunch of tags to the CA, however to the part that was actually in the post, the part about the making a portion of the Manti any bull, is a good idea.

I hope they do not give more public tags away. Doing it in the name of conservation is 1 thing. Giving them to a special interest group for their "approval" is wrong. If they own land big enough to aquire tags, they can do the CWMU program. If it is public land and public elk, they have no business giving those tags away.

Nebo,
Please, please, please, stand up for what is right and do not let this happen.

Everyone else, email and call your special interest group of choice, SFW, MDF, RMEF, BOU, UBA, let them know what you think of this idea. It is critical you speak up.

Read Nebo's post, he stated that hopefully some tags or permits would be given to the cattlemens association so they can sell them to help build elk herds...... I thought you were agreeing with that. Sorry. I agree with making some areas open bull, but not to appease ranchers if thats the whole motivation so that they can increase grazing in those areas..

If giving public tags to CA's to sell for profit was not already in the works, why was it a specific question on the Elk Survey?

Just wonderin'.

As far as 12 Mile being "Any Bull" I can't see that happening. I can see them adding it to the Archery extended unit that is already in place on the unit maybe???

You are 100% right. In Nevada we can not raise our elk numbers because some ranchers have to much pull!
