Here is a bull I took opening morning on general any bull tag here in Utah. Being a general tag, and having only 2 days set aside for this hunt, I was prepared to shoot any bull including a spike to fill the freezer. There are alot of hunters in this area and if you dont tag out opening day...it gets real tough. I got to the area I was going to hunt well before light, waited at the 4 wheeler 20 minutes or so for it to get light enough to see and started in. I caught this single bull feeding at first light in one of my favorite meadows. I am almost ashamed to say it but I was less than 1/4 mile from my 4 wheeler and only 10 minutes into the hunt. Needless to say, it was an easy retrieval. Although not a huge bull, he was a fighter. His G2 on the passenger side was freshly broken off and another tip broken off as well. Although it is always bitter sweet to end a hunt early, I must admit I love being the first shot of the day on opening morning!

That will fill the freezer!! Did you rub your eyes in disbelief when you first looked into the meadow and saw the lone bull standing there? We've all felt it, that feeling of "I'm in business"!

exactly! As soon as I saw the elk body out in the meadow and raised my binos and put antlers on him, I instantly felt that 'Im in business' feeling. Then just as fast I felt the 'wow...my hunt is already over. What just happened??' feeling.
Thats whats so great about hunting is the flood of different emotions that come over you so fast.
I appreciate all the kind words but just so everyone knows, this is a general tag but it is on private property. My great grandpa bought a sheep range during the depression that our family still runs sheep on so I have been blessed to hunt it all my life. It is still tough, there were over 30 hunters from my family up there and we took 3 bulls opening day, and only 2 more the rest of the hunt, but still, I dont want to give the impression this was on public land. Pulling one off the North slope with 5 billion other hunters is much more manly than this!

Hunting...it's always an adventure! Thanks for sharing your hunt, especially for those of us watching from the sidelines this year! Congratulations!

Nice job! I as well ended my elk hunt openers morning in a any bull unit and was ready to take anything to get more elk in the freezer. I very proudly shot great spike.
Congrats man....

Nice bull Ryan. Hey I wanted to talk to you about the draw for next year.

Ryan,

Don't discount your hard work. Private or public, you put in your time and got the job done on not just a fine bull but a great buck too!! Congrats to you my friend!!

I would be dang proud of that bull. Way to go.
Love to tag out early with something like that and enjoy the beautiful country side that I dont get to visit very often.
