Had a 4th grade student show me a picture of the bull his brother killed this past weekend in unit 62 public land that green scored 386 7x7 a pig of an elk for colorado .The picture was out of the Grand Junction Daily Sentenial Dont know if you can go to the papers website and see it or not Hunter was 14 years old. Just goes to show you when all thoes 400+ utah bulls get angry they run all the smaller bulls to colorado

It's a nice story but we all know how this went down.....bull killed in 61 and snuck across divide road into 62. We all know there aren't any bulls that big in 62;-)

I picked up a leftover cow tag for the first season, and was amazed at the bulls I encountered. I have hunted this unit 8 years for bulls, and only killed one bull. Saturday, 10/10 I saw 12 bulls, 3 over the 300 mark, and one looked to be about 350. They were still bugeling, and satelite bulls were trying to move in on the heard bulls. Must be a good year for colorado.

I would be in favor of making both sides of the road draw only. No first hand knowledge - but the scenario you laid out has to happen a lot.

Year in year out there are great bulls killed in 62 its no fluke there is great habitat and cover to grow big elk their. Congrats to the kid he better enjoy it!

Well these comments don't suprise me coming from a guide service. Why don't we just make every unit in the state draw, so maybe in 10-20 years I'll be able to hunt unit 62. Have you thought about any of the local businesses that will be effected by this ignorant train of thought. Delta, Grand Junction, Montrose, Nucla, etc.

Your right wcolhunter we will all probably have to go back to riding horses to town if we try to limit the tags in another unit by 10 or 20 percent. I heard it said very well the other day by another Monster Muley member he said, "its no longer about managing wildlife its now about managing businesses". Its too bad! Ninety percent of Colorado bulls never get to reach maturity because people like you are more worried about how much liquor you sell in the fall or whatever it is you sell . I don't guide in unit 62 or 61. Unit 66 is the model unit. You can draw it as a resident with no points and you will have a chance at a mature bull. That's all most hunters are looking for is a chance at a mature bull.

westcolhunter,

Nucla is pretty well screwed either way you slice it. Only a Uranium boom can dig them out of the hole they are in. Pay attention to what JC was saying, It makes a great deal of sense.

I'm not the one making money from hunting, YOU ARE!
So why don't you take your hypocrisy to another website where you can B.S. someone else. I've lived in this area my intire life, and hunted UNIT 62 every year with my family.
You don't give a damn about conservation, you're just part of the problem with hunting in Colorado. It's a damned shame that hunting has become more of a "BUISNESS" then a hobby shared with family and friends.
HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU MAKE OFF HUNTING A YEAR???
That's right you're all about wildlife management, you would never profit off of hunting. PLEASE HYPOCRIT!

Well James what money i make on hunting has no correlation with a lack of conservation. The DOW makes money on every aspect of hunting; are they more the problem also? I'm not saying that no one can make money on hunting. LIMITING TAGS IS CONSERVATION!!
You are just the same as all the other na sayers. You think that you should be able to hunt the same way that your family has for years. The state is managing herds for a certain number of elk. We are getting more and more hunters hunting OTC units. Something is going to have to be done some time. Remember we are both outdoorsmen and I don't want to fight with you. I don't question that you are passionate about the sport. Maybe we can agree to disagree! But, I still think that if we could limit tags a bit we could still draw tags and have a better quality hunt. You and I might have a few more bulls on the wall instead of raghorns hanging in the garage rafters.

You say we are getting more and more hunters OTC units. I have to disagree with you there, at least for SW Colorado.
I remember when I was a kid and there would be horse trailers lined up for a mile on the trailheads and camps scattered all through out the main roads.

Now you just don't see that, I think we have fewer hunters, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's just this area? Anyone else?

the photo was shown to me by one of my students , i cant post it ..... there was a picture in the grand junction daily sentenial you could google the news paper web site and see it.it is a nice bull...sorry to post without a picture .

I tried to not say anything about the above posts but.....Hunting in the state of colorado will never be like it was back in the olden days, we can point fingers at everyone the state, outfitting, out of state hunters, and politicians. To me now its all about my kids being able to hunt and have the chance to kill a good animal. What needs to be done to make that happen ??? I dont have the answer. I do know what ever the answer is it is going to piss someone off, there will be no happy medium.I would hate to see 62 go to a special draw or limited draw, I have hunted there for the past 25 years, but if it needs to go draw so my kids can hunt it then I guess I would be for it!!!!I do think we all hold the same standards we all want a good hunt!!!!!Just my 2 cents worth......be kind
