As a non-resident I hired an outfitter but don't mind since it is pretty big country. I shot a nice 6X6 and my cousin shot a 4x4. Bulls were bugling in the snow and I felt like I had good odds since I was carrying a rifle. I shot mine out of the same area where my cousin shot his 4x4 a few days earlier. Did I mention that a grizzly bear found his 4x4 before we did and buried the whole thing except for the head and antlers. When we found the elk carcass the grizzly was standing guard over it at about 20 yards. He was a big silver colored bear with a big hump on his back. We were on horses when we came upon the bear/elk carcass or things could have got interesting real fast. We kept a close eye on the surroundings while dressing my elk! Our outfitter did a great job so send me a pm or email if you want more info.

Good looking bulls, nice job guys. The grizzly bear encounter sounds like it added some excitement to the hunt. We had a similar experience during a WY elk hunt 7 or 8 years ago with the grizzly's - a little too much excitement for my liking. My hunting partner had a griz stalk him in the snow then bluff charge him, I found my buddies tracks then quickly realized there were griz tracks following his. Black bears are no problem but the Griz are a completely different story. Glad you guys finished the hunt unscathed and were able to tag out on bulls. Good job!

same thing happened to us I just didn't want to seem like a long wind. I saw the grizzly about 70 yards in front of me on the day he killed the 4x4. While blood trailing his elk the grizzly cold trailed our route from the horses and they got scared and broke their britchen and then he turned around and tracked us until we heard him breaking the brush behind us. Since it was really dark and we were being tracked by a grizzly, which we could hear, we thought it would be best to wait til morning. That is how he got our elk and buried it. He peed and pooped al over the buried carcass.

Glad you guys had a good hunt, it looks just a touch cold.
Bears in the dark that part don't sound as much fun as shooting elk. LMAO

We tracked my elk for days this year, when we found it (four days after shot) there was a black bear on it. He'd buried most of the carcass and crapped all over too.
