Rick,

It is just about time! Good luck, have a fun hunt, kill a great bull, and be safe! No pressure! Just remember your tag is a "free one!"

+1000

Go get your bull. Take along your family and friends and take time to "smell the roses"!! You have a had a tough year. Go soak up some of the high mountain air. Time in the mountains chasing elk is very theraputic to my soul!!

Good luck and be safe! Remember nets are for fish! Shoot one that puts a smile on your face!!

I got told today there is a bunch of snow, so this could change our game plan a little!!! AR has great family and friends that will bust their butts to find him a "BIG STINKY"...I'm ready to help make some memories with my "OLD" buddy AR....JK...Let the Count down begin...

Later, L.T.

good luck AR

I think he is going to have lots of good help and will kill as good as bull as the area holds. Thanks for the goat help, now it is your turn buddy!

I hope you get one of them big bulls I saw down there on the archery hunt. Good luck, I cant wait for the pictures.

Hey guys..
Thanks for all the well wishes. I appreciate all the support from all of you. I was surprised to see this post as I haven't been on for a few days, but it is cool to see all of your responses.
I'm finally starting to get a little excited as this snow should help get the bulls down off the tops and with all the guys who are wanting to help, it should be a blast.
I just got back from shooting again, and still having issues with my rifle. I thought I had it all taken care of but started getting the delay again. I guess I'm going to have to pull out a different rifle just to ease my mind. I was able to put 6 shots in a 10 inch circle at 600 yards, but the delay really bothers me.
Anyhow, now I've got Barbie in my pack, and all the support from you guys, I'm ready to get out and enjoy the "free" tag. I didn't think I'd ever get to hunt mature bulls in Utah again, but winning the expo tag gave me the opportunity.
You guys rock... I'll try to do an update each day throughout the hunt...
Thanks !!
Rick

Rick,

Do you need my wife to help you with your rifle?;-)

You better be nice to Barbie!

I'll send it up if you guys can figure it out. I am thinking I'll try out my other new rifle. I have been doing a little research on it and I'm really thinking it would be fun to take my .257 Weatherby Magnum.
With a 115 gr Nosler ballistic tip it still carrys over 1400 ft lbs of energy out to 500 yards....
What do you think?

Barbie is in good hands with me Ty. I really think she needs some warmer clothes for the weather now, but it seems like she takes the cold pretty well. She never said a word about the cold and snow last weekend up hunting deer, so maybe she will be ok..

What tag is it for those of us who don't know?! Also grats and best wishes on your hunt!

Rick good luck.

I wouldn't use a ballistic tip on elk. I had one blow up on the shoulder of a cow elk quite a few years ago and haven't used them since.

I won the late Fishlake LE elk permit at the Expo.
It is one of the units I grew up on and we have taken a couple respectable bulls over the past few years for my wife and daughter. I hope I can maybe better them, but that is going to be a challenge.
With a little help and a lot of luck, it may happen..and I have a lot of help, but very little luck this year...but we are going to give it our best..

Good luck on the hunt.

My opinion is that the late hunts are the best out there for the big bulls. I'm sure you'll do great!

Try some GM215M's.

Also, big cases need to be ran @ a high volume to avoid hangfires.

Good luck on the hunt. I wouldnt use the 115BT.

REDDOG,
I have not been able to find anything down here except CCI's down here. I wondered if maybe that was my problem, but they seem to work fine in all the other loads I have done this year.
I have taken the gun to a gunsmith who told me it was probably from a rough spot on the trigger mechanism, and he took it and polished it. Apparently that was not the problem as the problem really got bad yesterday. Now we are thinking it is a problem with the firing pin. Sending it back to CA today to see if they can help.
Would you guys think the .257 WM would be ok to shoot with Nosler Partitions instead?
I have my 7MM set up and sighted in so I have that option ready, and my son has offered me his CA in 300RUM which is sighted in and shooting the same reloads I had loaded for mine, so now it is just a matter of deciding what to shoot.
Stopped and talked to ltroper on the way home last night and discussed our gameplan and so the excitement is starting to build. My son will have two days off to scout before the opener and we all know what he is capable of.
Funny how things that really are not issues, become big issues when the hunt gets closer! LOL...

Wishing you the best of luck Rick.
Please keep us up-dated when time permits.
Barbie likes her picture taken so post a few of her helping out on your hunt.Ha This should be good.LOL.
Take care,
Monte

Shoot what you feel comfortable with rick ! If you are shooting well with your 257 weatherby use it ? If you need any help from the big city ,to send up parts or guns just say the word !
Good luck and dont let jace walk you into the ground the first day. lol
John

Thanks for the offers John..
With my knee now having gone out, and my lack of an ankle, he can walk me into the ground from the house to the truck. Walking isn't going to work for this hunt. I may be able to hobble a few hundred yards to get to where I can get a look at an animal, but I'm afraid that may be my undoing on this hunt. I will do all I can but if a lot of walking is required, I may have to go without. I was able to get around pretty good on mrs ktc's goat hunt, but things have gone downhill about as fast as her goat did.
It sounds like I will be getting a knee replacement shortly after this hunt is over. I thought by doing the surgery I had early this spring, that I would be ready to fly for the hunt, but it all backfired and the knee went the wrong direction.
I will do all I can to get to where I need to be, but everyone is aware of my limitaions..
I think I'll end up shooting Jace's 300...
One way or another, we will get-r-done !

Just my opinion but i wouldn't even think of hunting elk with a fast ballistic tip! Just asking for disaster IMO. A Nosler Partition or Accubond? Certainly, Yes!!

Good luck on your hunt!

Joey

The snow has pushed the elk out and down! Just got back from a short 3 hour ride after shooting the rifles again, and seen over 200 head of elk. There were herds of elk sitting on open ridges, watching all the muzzle hunters sitting along the roads, watching them. LOL...
Things are looking up for the late hunt!!!
And getting exciting..

Craig...get ready for a great hunt!!!!

Good luck Rick! It sounds like you and Jason are going to have a great time. Just don't expect me to be delivering any pizzas, they'd be kinda cold by the time I got there ;-)

ar,

Didnt we look like a pair goat hunting?;-) Sorry to hear your knee is giving you trouble. Just let those guys helping pack you around? They are young and full if fizz and vinegar!

Barbie only hunts in a bikini. You take care of her as to not rub off her mojo! I feel like she is cheating on me?;-)

Rick,

With your knee and ankle messed up I would shoot the 300 as you can really reach out further with it! Nothing wrong with the 7MM, It has worked well for me a few times!

Glad the snow came to help ya out. Good luck and enjoy your trip! Can't wait to hear about the hunt!

Sounds like it's going to be a fun hunt. I leave Washington on the 5th Headed to Richfield. I hope to get a nice bull. I will send you another PM and hope we can hook up and say hi.

Good luck

Rick, just got back from snow-ville at the Gorge, email me the details.

I can bring down my Christensen Arms 300 WSM...you won't have trouble hitting anything with it. :)

But you might have to sign a promissory note that you'll give it back!!

Got my pack frame, my sleds, ready to pack out a big stinky for you!

Pred

You are going to have a GREAT hunt!

I'd shoot the 7MM, but use your left eye.....

I still have that new pack that needs breaking in.

Thanks again for all your help on the archery hunt. It is PAYBACK time!

TRG.

I have decided it was my reloads(?)that were causing the problem, but still don't know why. I shot some factory rounds and they shot great, so guess I'll use the 300RUM after all..
Been seeing a couple of possible shooters so things are looking good. We have still not found anything "huge" but anything respectable is in deep doo doo if it gets too close..
This stupid time change really is going to put a crimp in this weeks scouting!!!
Come on SATURDAY!!

and Treeslayer, glad to see you have come out of "lurking"..
Get on here and raise some hell buddy!!!
You need to be there as you have been my good luck charm on elk...

Treeslayer you better bring your pack... cause us old guys are in charge of binos, spotting scopes, and tending camp...not packing...J/K

If it weren't for bad luck.....

Damn the luck...I woke up last night with a sore throat and a nagging cough.. congestion deep in my lungs...
I just hope it isn't pnuemonia....x(
Gonna have to hit the meds and vitamins hard the next few days to see if I can whip it before Saturday..

Ty, does Barbie do nursing? ;-)

I'm sure I would feel much better if I could get a real-life Barbie to come in and make me feel better..
But I'm sure my sweet wife will do all she can...she knows that I was finally getting excited to go chase big stinkys, and after the last tough 3-4 months we have had, we need the break and some good luck to pull us thru.

I look back and will be somewhat glad to get 2009 in the books..
But then again I look at a few of the good/great hunts we have already had and hope it continues for a few more weeks. It rocked to see my youngest kill his first spike bull elk, to see my wife thump a nice buck a week after her battle in the hospital, and then to see my oldest son put a hurt on that big moose...
2009 will go out with mixed feelings...just hope there are a couple more positive ones to sway it to the good side.. :D
Rick

RE: If it weren't for bad luck.....

I hope you start feeling better. Pump up on the meds for the next couple days. I now have one sick kid at home. Hope he gets better before Thursday morning.

AR,

I'll be there! Get feeling better - FAST!

I'll stick to lurking. I'll let you know what I see this afternoon.

LT,

Hopefully those ponies of yours are around again! That way the pack doesn't have to be broke in just yet.

TRG

I am flying home from Seattle today. I hope to get up and do a little looking around on Friday.

I will stop by the trailer on Friday night....I am pretty sure where you are camped!!! haha

Get feeling better man.....I hope you kill a smoker!

Make sure Barbie gets a good nights rest so she can help pack your bull off the mountain Rick.
How ya feeling?Hope your feeling better for the opener.

Got a text from the guys up on the hill tonight.....covered a TON of miles and never even saw a bull....YIKES! Said it is tough going right now...might need some bad weather!

Barbie
is being a ##### ! Says her biKini is too cold when riding the atv she got stuck in a snow drift and whines about the rough roads. She has taken over the spotting
I have Proof in photos when I get to a punter.
Seen lots of elk this morning but the big bulls are still tough to find. Lots of hard miles that
Hunting should get better now. Congrats to craig on a nice bull.
.

hey rick good luck! did craig send u a pic of his bull? he made two damn nice shots on him. 290 on the first, then probably just over 300 on the second, right in the back of the neck. that 300 ultra did a hell of a good job.

Hey all, I planned on updating every night from my son's Blackberry but that is a pain in the "rear end".
Just ran hom for a shower and thought I'd update while waiting for my ride back.
Lots of hard hunting, covering lots of miles, and spending hours behind scopes and glasses. Seeing a lot of elk but no big bulls. I think they should start loosening up and moving around any day. (I hope)
A few are starting to move but it is so dark before they come out it is hard to see what they are..

Anyhow, we are keeping at it!!!!
