how long will it last?

I was wondering how long everyone thinks the state wide spike hunt in utah will last in the expanded limited entry units? I am a resident and should be able to draw an archery tag in the next year or two. that being said i will not apply for an archery tag as long as every utard will be out there chasing spikes in limited entry areas. Its funny only the archery hunters are having direct competition during their hunt!

Its realy not as bad as you think it is and I hate spike hunts! I can count on one foot how many weekday spike hunters ive seen hunting with a bow. Just avoid the weekends, hunt in deep country.

Finally IMHO if you turn in a tag in because of the spike excuse then you are just looking for excuses to fail. Get the tag and go get an elk! Next years dates are better then they have been for a few years.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

ya,tell the hunter that drawed the dutton archery tag that,he blowed all his points to get the tag,him & his dad spent alot of time before season watching/patterning a bull,well thanks to a dink (spike) hunter & a couple cow shooters that shot 3 elk on that hole opening morning and scattered legs/guts/heads it perty well took care of the hunter ever seeing that bull again.

Can you not read? I have never backed the spike hunt you putz.

I however wont sit on the side lines looking for excuses either. give me a chance at any Le unit and ill make a hunt out of it unlike you I don't care if I tag out or not. The amount of time I spend on hunting instead of complaining puts the odds in my favor.

You are the type that looks to put the blame on everyone else. You blame me for killing your bucks. You blame the division for crappy dates. You need rut hunts to see animals. you need people to stay out of your area to be successful. There are no big bucks in Utah Bla bla bla. Maybe you need to look deep inside yourself for the reason you cant kill anything. Maybe you need to get a couple of books on hunting and reading comprehension. Your hunting skills need updating. You also cant put to sentences together without saying the exact opposite of your point!

Archery is a year round commitment!!

I posed this question because i have a friend that drew the same tag i am after. allthough he did kill a very nice 350 bull on the last day. he and i experience the trails of competing with spike hunters. it wouldn't be so bad if they weren't constantly tooting their bugles!

That is why they call it hunting and not shooting. You talk about a bull that is still around but now you can't find him because of gutpiles next to some waterhole

I had an LE archery tag in Utah this year, and I can tell you from experience. . . . the spike hunters did not affect my hunt at all!
I spoke to several hunters past their prime and from out of state who were hunting in the less rugged terrain and did have to change tactics, but that's hunting.
30 min of the roads, I did not see another hunter. 60 min off the roads and I did not see another hunters tracks. Couple miles in and I was assured to have the elk to myself.
I suggest you get the tag before the age class reduction in management strategy takes its toll on the older bulls and forget the spike hunters.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-05-09 AT 05:50PM (MST)[p]+1 SW My brother and close friend mtquivers both had the LE tag last season. I went out with them and DID NOT have any issues with spike hunters. And at that the law is the law you can go hunt within the guidelines or you can sit at home and b**** about things. The latter of the two will never put meat in the freezer!!!!

The next couple of years will be as good as it gets for Utah Archery hunters!!!!!! Unless you are hunting well known areas, then spike/cow hunters are no issue........I agree with everythign that sw said+++++++
You can't kill a big bull unless you apply!
