Utah Premium Deer question

I'll have 9 points for the NR deer draw this year, and have tried for the Pauns every time. With the tags continually being cut back and odds skyrocketing, would a hunt in the Book Cliffs be good enough to try to draw? 7 tags vs. 3 tags would certainly make me feel better about applying there. Any info or suggestions appreciated.

Blank,

I'm sure you've studied the odds plenty. If you're OK on waiting another 10 or more years then you may have your Pauns tag. The Henries would likely take you 20 or so years. Considering the number of nonresident tags doesn't go up or down.

I would be very happy with a tag on the Book Cliffs, and think a guy like you could kill a great buck out there.

With the amount of new roads and drilling going on in the Book Cliffs, I don't think the hunting is going to get any better than it is right now.

I'd rather be hunting than waiting on a tag I may never draw.

My 2 cents anyways. Good luck!:)

With 9 points you will have about a 1% chance of drawing the pauns. It is a tough Rifle hunt. Henry Mtns you will only have about a 1% chance of drawing.

Bookcliffs you will be guarenteed a rifle tag this year.San Juan elk ridge you will have about a 1 in 3 chance for the rifle permit. Vernon you would be guarenteed a tag as well.

If I had 9 points and some patience I would wait for the Pauns or Henry mtn Muzzleloader or the henry's rifle. But if you have to draw then the Books or San juan is your best bet.

Pauns all the way... I drew it twice in 7 yrs and still dream about it..
the draw its about having luck I think pts are over rated.

When do you think there will be a nonresident muzzleloader tag on the Henries?

Without max points your odds of drawing a Pauns muzzleloader tag is around .43%, the rifle is around .49%, and your odds of drawing the 1 rifle tag on the Henries is something like .15%. It's going to take you at least 10-15 if not more years to be in the bonus point game for a Pauns tag.

I think you're better off playing the lotto in Idaho, and hunting the Book Cliff's while the hunting is good.

You could likely hunt the Book Cliffs, and draw an antelope or another deer tag in a lesser unit before you'll draw a Henries or Pauns tag.

Thems some poor odds for our "premium" units:(

All that being said who knows somebody has to draw the random tags, and it may as well be you.

Drum,

Last year it took 8 to be guaranteed, and it looks like it will take 9 this year, could take more with some of the 200"+ bucks taken in '05.

Thanks for the quick, awesome replies. Yes, I do think that if I could draw I would put enough effort into it to get a nice buck. Have never been into score, but them old, heavy knarly 5-8 year old bucks do it for me. I'd shoot a 30" forked horn in a heartbeat, and brag about it forever! I would rather hunt than wait, so will probably try for the BC, and look for those places a long way from vehicle and 4 wheeler access. Old as I am, I still like to walk for them.

Hey Blank, send me an email @ [email protected] if you want some more detailed infomration about the book cliffs. My Dad and I had tags out there this year and did pretty good. We hiked out butts off and had a great hunt.

Wife drew the Book Cliffs tag this year as a NR with no points :) There are some good bucks down there but be prepared for some company.

Any Roadless ares in Book Cliffs? I thought I saw an Elk Hunt that mentioned Roadless (Little Creek).
