Ive been spending alot of time this winter on rye creek and have filmed a ton of nice muleys, but nothing really spectacular. A couple nice heavy 170 class bucks and one that looked like he might go 180 if he still had both sides on (thought it was a bit early to be dropping). Anyhoo im starting to get alot of the bucks two or three times and am looking for others. I've been staying pretty low and was wondering if any of you guys knew of any spots in the area where i can find some more nice bucks before the drop. any help is lots of help.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-06 AT 06:57PM (MST)[p]Some of the biggest bucks are on private land. If you are looking to shed hunt in 270, you'll have some competition. I bet guys are out already in some of the best areas. Early I know, but the size of deer in the area is no secret. If pics are all you are after, some good deer can be spotted off of 93. Saw a pig going to Lost Trail right by the Rocky Knob. If you can, cruise some of the roads that you can see in the old burns. mtmuley

Thanks mtmuley, all im mainly looking for is photography. i do most my shed hunting in may after bear season when some areas open up. I have seen a few nice bucks right off the highway too. im also assuming most the area ive been filming has been private (from the road). going back down friday, ill see if i cant find somewhere new.

Obviously right now a lot of the roads are impassable. Wait until about June when most FS gates are open, and the snow starts coming off. I bet most of what you are looking at belongs to Craig Barrett. He owns the old Big Velvet property, alot of the stuff North of Rye Creek road, and almost to Hannah Memorial from what I understand. Also the Triple Creek. I guess he took a 200+ inch buck this year. Check out Sula Peak. There is also some private land off French Basin that holds some deer. Good filming! mtmuley

I seen two good sized bucks just up the hill from the old elk farm win I was up there last Oct. My fater-in-law lives across the 93 from rye creek. Was able to set up the spotting scope and watch a nice bull from the front yard too. But next time Im up there I will spend less time in the Rocky knob and the Rams head and Antlers in Wisdom lol.

cant wait to go back

I went back down yesterday, didnt see any big guys but alot of nice bucks in the 150-160 range. Im pretty sure alot of the area ive been fiming these guys on is the old big velvet. That was a high fenced deal wasnt it? must have really cut into to the animals winter range, its just perfect, south facing, rolling hills, probably helps them alot now being open.
where can you get off the road on French basin??? can you go through that ranch to area on the other side or is it just that little stretch?

The access off of French Basin is actually a little sliver of state land before Shining Mountain, bordering the Vogt ranch. It takes you West towards Sula Peak. That area is also accessible off of Rye on a road I can't remember the name of right now. Good maps are available at the Paper Clip in Hamilton if you are interested. I like to use the USGS with FS maps, as USGS doesn't specify state property. mtmuley

Thanks MTMuley, I have maps for down there, i do alot of fishing in the area. i was wondering where it was public on french basin because thats where that big cow kill was this year wasnt it? ill have to check it out next time and put some miles on the boots.
