I have the points to draw a late hunt or a muzzy hunt...

What would you pick and why?

Im talking about the cash north unit witch dose not have alot of elk on it so it may be hard to find them later in the year when they are not bugleing and recovering from the rut, but they are not super vocal on this unit during the muzzy hunt either plus I would have to deal with all the muzzy deer hunters

Lets hear all of you thoughts and experinces

Thanks!

The only way I would consider a late hunt over a muzzy hunt is if I could draw the late, but not the muzzy. Just too many pluses on an early rut hunt.

I had that very situation this year. I had the points to draw a Muzzloader tag on the Wasatach or a late hunt somewhere else. Last year my brother had the late tag and killed a bull that went 371. I have always wanted to hunt elk during the rut, the late hunt is more like deer hunting with alot of glassing involved. Well I got a Wasatach muzzy tag this year. The bulls were not talking at all, it was hot, there were a ton of deer hunters out stirring things up it was a very tough hunt. I had a buddy that was in the same situation he chose the late hunt and well last weekend killed a bull that went 372. Needless to say I wish I could go back to last Febuary and start over. If you know where the bulls are later in the year I would recommend the late hunt but that is just me.

I helped a guy with the Muzzy tag this year, on the Wasatch, and it was unreal.
We had 6-12 bulls bugling both days we hunted.
Called in many bulls.
I would not hesitate getting a Muzzy tag.

There are only 3 units that DO NOT have General mzzy deer hunters swarming the unit! while you are on an LE muzzy elk hunt.(2009 hunts)

If it was me-----I would go for one of those 3 units if I wanted to do LE mzzy elk.

Personally, I would double check the cow rifle hunts---then go for a Late LE bull hunt, if I was in your boots.

Lots of time to make the final decision!

I think the Muzzy hunt would be my choice as the bulls are still usually bugling and I enjoy that part of the hunt. Some years the Muzzy is actually the better hunt for the rut.
The late hunts are very dependant on the weather in most units, and the bulls hide up and don't move much, and usually come out right at dark.
If you have an area where you know the bulls hang later in the year, you may want the late, but it can be a tough, frustrating hunt.
