NM Unit 2b or 2c Archery?

Which of these Units would be better for the January Archery Hunt?

A friend of mine and I drove up there last weekend to look around and drive some roads. What kind of deer would I expect to see? Any general areas that would be better than others? We wanted to check out the state line area but ran out of time. Deer numbers? Quality? I know this unit's tags are highly sought after, but we've hunted unit 10 for about five years now and, although deer numbers there are limited we've seen some whopper bucks. Just looking into different options. I'm used to seeing lots of deer, as I used to live in unit 34 right outside of Mayhill. Just moved to Albuquerque and am looking into some new country that is a little closer. Don't want anyone's honey hole as I get out and walk and find my own spots. Any additional info would help.

With as much press as these units are getting both here and through Garth Carter's service, you might as well forget drawing these units.

I hunted Jan 2005 in 2B , and had the time of my life . Granted it was a great snow year , we were into deer everyday , morning , mid day and afternoon . I never shot at any bucks , but knocked an arrow a time or two . 2B is AWESOME ! 2C can be good too , theres just not as many deer there . My big brother services the pump jacks through out 2 a,b,&c so I've been pretty fortunate learning the area as hes there every day . 2C is getting better too , I think guys go in there expecting to find big bucks all over those sagebrush flats and p/j mesas , but when that doesn't happen they loose hope and leave early .2B beleive it or not is mostly road hunted , up and down from Caracas to Mestenas , so any where in 2b is good if you just get alittle ways from the two tracks.....Best unit in NM , but rumor has it the Lt . Governor tag holder scored on a MONSTER buck from unit 50 , !!!!Yep 50 ...Once Garth Carter and the likes,here of that , their clients will over load that unit...Time will tell....NMHUNTNUTT

2C has fewer deer than 2B but for the most part has bigger bucks. Not as many bozos in 2C also! All of the 2's are super but snow plays a big role in the late hunts. Hard to stalk deer in crunchy snow. I saw the buck out of 50, what a toad! He scores in the 220's! We have film of this buck the last week in Nov. on San Antone Mt. with 7 does. He was killed about 20 miles from there with a larger group of does in 50, in Dec. We have video of a larger buck that we found in 50, he was a monster, somewhere in the 240's, NO SH*T. He up and vanished by the time the hunter arrived! Deer don't get that big on public land by being stupid! Hope I can find his antlers! There are some really big bucks all over northern NM. But when you go to the 2's you will see more deer than most units in NM, and the occasional whopper!

wesmd , thats great you got some video of him . Mossback filmed the hunt , I'd bet theyed be real interested in your video too . I heard the hunter and group were staying over in Antonito and when the guys went for a drink the hunter was nervous of leaving his deer so he took him into the bar....I guess I'd want to keep the buck in my view too....NMHUNTNUTT

He was the high bidder for the Lt. Governor tag ,he can hunt any unit not including reservation land from Sept 1 through Dec 31 with weapon of his choice..NMHUNTNUTT

The Lt. Govenors tag runs from Sept 1st to Jan 31st. They changed it last year to include Jan.

Also I want to make sure all MM members know that there is no deer in 2B or 2C. Might find a couple but majority left. I think they all went to unit 50.

This is going to be a bad year anyway. No snow, no winter, outlook does not even look good for spring. Anybody know anyway to make it rain/snow. NM might be a completly black by fall - fires.

Ya know 30inbuck , I heard the muleys ALL migrated over the pass to 50 and all of 2 had NO DEER left..haha. I wished all tag fees had to be sent/received instead of just $6.00 , but ah well , looks like we'll all be gunning for 50 eh...or 2

Oh well, there are plenty of videos out there to watch while the other guys are out hunting.

NM unit 2B is no secret , nor has it been for some years now . I look at the number of apps every year and there is always a few thousand that put in for the 2s' , but you can't win if you don't play . Thats like trying to keep AZ unit 1,3, hush hush , doesn't work , everyone has heard . NM big game tag allotment is one of the last true lottery drawings , its a matter of your # being spooled , then your units are checked for entry . 10000 people can put in for unit 2B and 500 for say unit 4 with unit 2b as a second or third choice and its the processor that spools the app #s' making equal across the board as to you gets drawn . Your app # must be drawn first , then your unit preferance is checked for avalibility .....NMHUNTNUTT
Besides , with magazines like Trophy Hunter , Muley Madness and Eastmans Journal , the quality units have already been long exposed , then theres the videos ....Its not my secret , nor is it my honey hole , heck I roll the dice every year with units trying different ones as second and third choices , never know , rather be lucky than good , just have to draw first..

I thought this site was for conversation , visiting with other hunters from around the US & Canada , sharing any info you felt comfortable telling , but seems like every post of a unit in almost any state now turns to contraversy as to quality , canned , ethics , don't tell stuff , with wise asss remarks . This thread asked a question , I answered as it was a thread I have a little knowledge and more so interest in ....Not sure if I'm reading the post up tight or maybe just me , but I knowitsa long time away till the draws for most states and I'd rather talk hunting with high hopes rather than argue comments or dodge threads ...NMHUNTNUTT

That's the "School Teacher Deer" poached in 2. It's gross score is 250 and change.

Now it hangs in the ABQ office.

A buddy of mine lives in Antonito and told me the story about the guy taking that bar into the bar, was quit a party. He has lived there all his life and does alot of looking in that country, and is very surprised that buck came out of there. He says big bucks are scarce there.

Yes the buck did come out of 50. He said he thought it was a 9x10 couldnt really remember but said it was about 36 inches wide not very heavy. The fellow danced with the atlers on his head the whole nite...... guess he was in town asking locals if they had seen any bucks and some kid told him where to look for this buck.

I find the kid pointing him to this buck a bit off , this buck was found last year as well as another , possibly bigger buck and was kept hush hush hoping for them to make it past nature and poachers . They feel these are resident deer , not migrating with the CO herds , there really hasn't been any snow to push . In late summer of 05 the bucks were located again by some wood cutters , near private land . Im not sure how Doyle was contacted or who scouted the deer , that will probly be released in the video , heck its all hear say till we actually see the deer and hear the story from the hunter or Mossback Prod. , you know how stories get twisted from one guy to another and on internet sites . I do know the buck was killed , and was checked out by NM & CO game and fish , and the kill site found , in 50....waiting , waiting ....NMHUNTNUTT

Your right the story NMHUNTNUTT1 never know for sure what exactly took place but one thing is for sure that buck did make it in the Antonito bar.My buddy said alot of pics where taken and said if might know who has one, sure would like to see that.
