WA State Mule Deer

I am a fairly new tranplast to the State of WA and looking for an area that I can take my wife to hunt mule deer during the general season. Can any of you recommend a unit that we could try, where we have a decent chance of seeing a four point? I moved here from Montana, so I have seen the really good hunting and am not expecting it to be up to that level, but would like to hunt a general season here in WA that would give us a decent chance at a nice respectable buck. (not wallhanger class) I have already taken some decent animals, but would like to see my wife take a nice buck. She isn't up to hiking 5 miles back into a remote area or up really steep terrain, but if there is any general rifle units that hold a good chance for a person that does his homework, I would be interested in that.

I appreciate any advice offered that is not sarcastic in nature.

Thanks,

Hunt the Eniat,Slide Ridge, Swakane, Chiwawa areas are all good. They are steep and get ready to glass. Probably your best bet.

As with anywhere else, the harder you hunt and more you get away from people the better hunting you will have. Pretty much any unit in Okanogan or Chelan county you should be able to accomplish what you want. Don't over look Ferry county either. Thats where the studs really are.

Like everyone else said. I would hunt the Chelan or Okanogan. I didn't catch what part of the state you are hailing from, but if you happen to be down south, Klickitat has some pretty nice deer without too much work. Its a prettty good hunt for your wife if you can sweet talk the landowners to get on some private property. The deer aren't monsters because they have alot of blacktail in them, but usually easy pickings. Taste pretty good too. I wouldn't torture your wife with muledeer up in Ferry. They are alot of work to track down and not much for a beginner to keep a good attitude. The whitetail hunting is phenomenal though, and a good bet for her if you don't score in mulie season. Good luck!

The Winthrop and Twisp area would be perfect for you and your wife. Lots of deer. Can't say how many 4pts. you may see, but there's always a chance at seeing a legal buck....3pt. or better. Good Luck!

Everyone is giving you good advise. Be sure to go to the WA web site and look at the special permit units for November buck hunts. That is good information. It is possible to draw the first time you apply so be sure to pick 4 units and have her apply if the time frame fits your schedule. They are the best chanch for the average hunter. Good luck!

The best rifle mule deer hunt is the "Special" Permit hunt in November. Most tags are for Chelan County GMUs 245-251 because the mature buck to doe ratio is very good. There are not too many local deer but there is a big migratory herd. You can pack into the Alpine Lakes and Glacier Peak wilderness areas for the Sept. High Hunt or pack in for the General Season. Early snow will drive them down early some years so hunt the last week of the season in Chelan County. I would hunt Douglas and Okanogan County for smaller bucks on opening day (Oct. 14). Don't miss the Permit application period from May 15 to about June 15. Hunting Regs will probably be out around the first of May (really late but that is the way WA does it). All of the guys are giving you good info. Good Luck
