Planning a hunt for elk in Wyoming for 2011 if I draw. I was hoping to use my 270WSM. I would like to use a Berger 150VLD. There has been a few mixed thoughts on the Bergers. Would a 140 Accubond be OK? What are some thoughts.

Just got back from Wyoming and took a cow using the 110 grn barnes tripple shock. Was very pleased with the performance. It was a 183 yard shot and she was facing me srait on, worked perfectly.

I've shot alot of elk with a 270WSM using the 140g Barnes TSX over MagPro. Never had a problem with it being enough gun.

But then I've shot a lot of elk with my 25-06 using the 120g Partitions before I bought my 270WSM. It's all about hitting them correctly.

You do your part & that gun will effectively and efficiently kill anything this side of the atlantic (and most everything on the other side too)

Federal factory loads with 130 grain Triple Shocks worked for me on a 340 type bull here in Colo. this year. I'm not a big fan of Accubonds had one blow up on the shoulder of a big bull a few years ago using my 300 WSM. I'm sure they work fine in the heart lung area but not penetrating the shoulder of a big bull elk. I was using a 180 grain Accubond also. Never had that problem with a Nosler Partition or a Triple Shock.

At the velocity the WSM is going to spit out those 140's it might be a good idea to bump up to a stouter bullet. At any distance the accubond will work great, but if you hit a bull pretty close the bullet might not hold together real well.
I've had really good luck with the 160 accubonds out of my 7mag, but that's a bigger bullet going a bit slower.

Thanks for the info. Any thoughts on the Bergers. They are shooting pretty good out of my gun. Orginally they were a target bullet, but claim they are great for hunting. According to TV and some magazines they work great.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-09 AT 03:09PM (MST)[p]Stick with a hunting bullet such as the Barnes triple shock, if you get a less then perfect shot; you will be glad you did.

Bake,

Use which ever bullet you rifle shoots best, period. That is what it boils down to. Quality in bullets is relatively equal. Everyone has their own preference. A 140 AB would do just fine, as would Barnes, Speer, or Berger. I shoot 150 ABs for everything in my 300Wby. It is an older Wby and doesn't shoot the Barnes well. It doesn't matter if you cant hit what your aiming at. 270 WbtMag is plenty of gun for elk. Just my opinion, good luck on your hunt.

Returned from an Elk hunt in Northern Arizona in area 5BS and took a Bull Elk at approx. 225 yrds with a 7mm Rem, 175gr Nosler Partition and the bullet went right through him.
