I heard him first, feeding towards me as I was glassing shooting spots 300 yards away across a canyon. I knelt down to see a small section of antler through a basketball-sized hole in a juniper tree at 40 yards and decided I'd take a shot if offered. He lowered his head to take his last bite of grass and I ended up hitting the top of his skull a glancing blow that sent bone shards into his brain, knocking him right down and doing no external damage. We couldn't figure out where I shot him until I skinned out his head to remove the antlers. He appears to have never walked away from a fight as he had numerous broken points and the whale tail was whacked off of one side. Packing him out from the canyon was fun and I'm now figuring out how best to mount those rugged antlers.
