Southern Colorado

Hey fellas, I'm hoping to get a little help with finding a unit to put in for in Southern Colorado. Here's what I need help with:

The "How many points it took to draw" table is pretty confusing to me. But I currently have 0 points in Colorado, so I obviously won't be putting in for Fort. Carson or Unit 10.

Also, I'll be taking my 10-year-old son along, so a Timberline hunt in the steep stuff is probably still a couple years off.

any suggestions on units to put in for for a chance at a 24" 4X4 would be great. I'll research specific areas once I narrow it down to a couple units. thanks.

I know that you said southern CO, but you might check out the "deer factory" of Colorado, called the white river herd near Meeker. Might be an area more compatable with a youngster. Most of Southern Colorado that is not private is pretty steep. You might consider trying to find a private land tresspass hunt.

You're going to need at least 1 point to get a tag. Deer are on the rebound, getting some nice bucks finally. You still gotta hunt for them though!

There are still a fair number of units that can be drawn with 0 points, at least through last fall. This next draw is anyone's guess.

Here is one you might not hear from another hunter yet some Colorado plains units like 107 used to be drawn for 0 pts. You would need come out to Colorado to scout the unit out, yet you could get permission by presenting a respectable image and doing a little homework. Look on the DOW website and see what plains units had hunters drawing with as few as 0 pts. Forget about the units with drainages are because they are the whitetail units. Any Colorado plains unit has decent bucks, bank on it. If you end up hunting the plains, I could give you a few tips.

Thanks a lot for the responses, guys. I know there are a lot of deer up in the northwest, just assumed it took a few points to draw. As far as the plains go, is that a tresspass fee situation, or will some ranchers let you on for being a nice guy?

Hey Txhunter 58, where in Texas are you?

Thanks again for the responses.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-16-06 AT 11:19AM (MST)[p]Here is the link that tells you how many points it took to draw each unit in years past. Click on Hunt recap for '05, deer and find a unit you are interested in. It has preference points broken down by residents/nonresidents. Remember that residents get 65% and nonres 35%.

The far northwest section of Colorado is hard to draw, but around Meeker/Craig, there are some units that are not so hard to draw.

I live in Kerrville.

One can get permission for free in eastern Colorado, yet one needs come out about 3 months ahead of season, door knock, and present a good image. It is getting tougher, yet alot of farmers fortunately are not addicted to money like others, mostly newer ranchers whom combine with guides and lock up alot of lands. If you draw a tag, send me a PM. Any unit in eastern Colorado has big bucks, yet just because they are there doesn't mean you will encounter them. Still in all the buck to doe ratios are high, the hunting not particularly tough, and the key is to get multiple permission from different farmers.

Walltenthunter,What would be a good unit out east to hunt whitetail?I have been applying for 103 becuase it has some public to hunt.Do you know anyone that would let me hunt on there land?I would be willing to pay a trespass fee if there are deer on there.
Thanks Elkhuntr
