LAST EDITED ON Dec-18-09 AT 00:22AM (MST)[p]Am I reading it wrong or can my dad draw this unit with 10-11 PPs for Muzzy OR Archery???? ( I think it's 11) He's a NR.

After seeing the comments on the other Wasatch post I checked the odds. It looks like he can draw based on the last few year's draw odds.

My dad is 74 and really wants a rut hunt. 2 years ago we hunted a quality CO unit archery and he said it was the best hunt he's ever been on. Bugling bulls everyday.

This year we hunted a NM unit, 1st rifle and never heard a bugle after the season started. I convinced him to put in for the Manti late rifle last year as I thought it was his best chance at a good tag and at his age, I wanted him to draw soon. After the NM experience he told me he'd rather hunt Utah during the rut even if his odds of connecting weren't as good. Basically he wants to be in the woods while they are screamin.

Is the first paragraph correct?? and any recommendations?????

Looking at the '09 draw, your dad with 11 points going into '10 would draw the Archery and should draw the Muzzle tag.

But that is "assuming" all numbers stay the same(number of applicants, number of tags)

Yep
Archery sure thing.
Muzzy good chance this year sure thing next year.
He's got the same NR points as me so I would say he could draw most any archery tag he wants. Same thing with Muzzy but might have to wait 1 or 2 years depending on the unit.Lots of late season tags in his reach to.
With his age go with the muzzy tag on a unit that he could draw this year and move around on easily. Not sure if Wasatch is the the right choice as far as easily moving around on, never been there.

fatherof3, I live in Kali and he lives in North Carolina. Distance is not an issue. NM, Colorado and Montana are all further and we usually hunt one of those every year.

Maybe I should have mentioned I have stock that will allow me to get him at least to the area we are huntin.

Also I believe our priorities are different. I want to take dozens of pics of him posing with a real good bull. He wants to spend quaility time with me and have screamin bulls around, even if they hold up behind cover @ 20 yards and he doesn't get to finish the deal.

It's his points, his tag, but I try to convinve him to go for the muzzy tag as I feel his success will be better.

Thanks for the replies.

I would highly recommend the muzzy tag over the archery tag. Even with the later season dates this year. Your Dad wanted to hear bulls bugling and see the rut. He will not see a lot of it on the archery hunt. The last week it will really take off, but my experience on that unit tells me the muzzy hunt is the one to have of the 2 you can draw. There is no shortage of nice bulls and they scream their heads off typically. I have been a part of 5-6 years of LE hunts on the Wasatch and that is my opinion. Good luck to you either way!

Archery is a year round commitment!!

11 points would have been a lock on any unit in the state for NR LE Archery Elk in 2009. I would look at Filmore Pahvant, San Juan, Monroe and Southwest Desert Archery long, long, long, long, long before even thinking about any tag on the Wasatch.

The Wasatch has great bulls and some incredible country, but it is the closest to Salt Lake and the most extra's tagging along of any unit in the state. There's 20 folks riding, scouting deer hunting and just plain being a menace per person with a tag. Add the Spike hunters during the archery season and it becomes a very tough hunt with a bow.

Southwest Desert and the San Juan are the two most remote units from any population and will give you a much, much higher quality hunt if you choose to go with a bow.

Here's the link to the odds page. Just put in your points last year either 10 or 11 and see what the odds are.

I would say look into either of the book cliffs or the Lasal's with a muzzleloader. Seems like the rut gets later each year and these are good units with lots of elk and still chances at Monsters. If you put in for rifle you'd have to settle for an inferior unit.

Unfortunately, he would NOT be a lock for archery units with current point (or even MAX points) because there has to be a max tag, and many units don't have one. For San Juan and Filmore, he would have had less than 1 % chance, but 100% for Wasatch.

Also less than 1% for muzzy San Juan and less than 5% chance for southwest, but 75% for Wasatch muzzy.

Be sure to note the CHANGE in the odds page. You should now enter the points you CURRENTLY have, not what you had before the last drawing. So if he currently has 11, that is what you enter. It will adjust you back to 10 for the odds charts.

If you want the rut, don't bow hunt, bepending on the weather even the ML often will only give you a few hours of calls each day. Don't worry about other people, hell they all go home after the opening weekend anyway, and by week two (the best time anyway) the place is all yours.

I drew the Fishlake Muzzy last with 9 NR PP. It was the best Elk hunt I have ever been on. The bulls were talking like crazy. I have never been on a rut hunt before and it was incredable. I have 18 NR point for CO and I hope to use them this year for an archery hunt. I just want to get back in the MNTs during that time of year.

I don't know how I missed San Juan, Pahvant and Southwest Desert being more points than 11 for NR. Sorry for the bad info :(

They did take 11 or 12 points. All the other units that had tags in the bonus pool went to 10 points or less in 2009.

Also as txhunter58 pointed out, be careful that the unit you're looking at has 2 or more NR permits.

Here's the link to the actual draw odds report for each LE Elk unit in 2009.

I got a buddy who hasn't drawn yet he has 12 or 13 NR points But he hoping for next year(2010) too.

What kind of physical shape is your Dad in ?

The Wasatch archery hunt can be very physically demanding and has already been said won't have much rutting action.

It's totally your call but a muzzy hunt sounds more doable.

Thanks for the info guys. I pushin the muzzy, just not sure which unit. He's only at 10PPs so I'm thinkin Manti or Wasatch.

Thanks again

I drew wasatch archery with 8 points last year. I killed a big 6x7 on 8-27-09 coming from a wallow. Called in bulls everyday. Bulls were bugling the first day I got there, 8-22-09. The biggest bull I saw was about 370". While out in the brush, I never once ran into another hunter (saw plenty on the road, though). I would put in for this hunt any day over the primo units, simply for the fact you can draw with about half the points.

If you want your dad to have a great experience, do the Wasatch Muzzleloader. I grew up and still live on the Wasatch and have hunted on it alot and know the bulls only get hotter towards the end of the rifle hunt. I would stay away from the archery hunt because the bulls may be talking, they aren't aggressive and screaming like they are later and there are plenty of good bulls that make it through to the muzzleloader hunt.
