WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Vice-President ##### Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday.

Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney sprayed him with shotgun pellets Saturday while the two were hunting at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.

Armstrong said Whittington was mostly injured on his right side, with the pellets hitting his cheek, neck and chest, and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Whittington was in stable condition Sunday, said Yvonne Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Christus Spohn Health System.

Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice-president was with Whittington, a lawyer from Austin, Texas, and his wife at the hospital Sunday afternoon.

Armstrong said she was watching from a car while Cheney, Whittington and another hunter got out of the vehicle to shot at a covey of quail late afternoon Saturday.

Whittington shot a bird and went to look for it in the tall grass, while Cheney and the third hunter walked to another spot and found a second covey.

Whittington "came up from behind the vice-president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong told the Associated Press in an interview.

"The vice-president didn't see him," she continued. "The covey flushed and the vice-president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by god, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good."

The shooting was first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

She said Whittington was bleeding but not very seriously injured, and Cheney was very apologetic.

"It broke the skin," she said. "It knocked him silly. But he was fine. He was talking. His eyes were open. It didn't get in his eyes or anything like that."

She said emergency personnel travelling with Cheney tended to Whittington, holding his face and cleaning up the blood.

"Fortunately, the vice-president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been," she said. "The vice-president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came."

Armstrong said Cheney is a longtime friend who comes to the ranch to hunt about once a year. She said Whittington is a regular, too, but she thought it was the first time the two men hunted together.

"This is something that happens from time to time. You now, I've been peppered pretty well myself," said Armstrong.

Too bad it was not Bush. It's better to shoot a bush than it is to shoot a person. I hear he's in deep chit for not reporting the incident. Likely wont amount to anything, but still he broke the law - again. . .

I didnt read the whole story... But it figures that he didnt report it... MAN! the things those guys get away with!

Imagine if Cheney were the one getting shot. Someone would be going to prison tossing Bubba's salad for a really long time.

Finally I can agree with Zigga on something. If the old bird had shot Cheney the secret service would have shot him dead on the spot.

it's against the law to not report a shooting, no matter what, friend or fo. Its' like getting into a car accident with more than 500 bucks in damages, by law you must report it (it may be higher in some states) or like hitting someone with a car and then leaving the scene. If it were okay to just go arround shooting people for fun, there would be a lot more people taking their "friends" hunting. - get it now smart guy?

as per my class, what's wrong with what i said? In fact, had he shot a bush he would not have to report that. it's not illeagle to shoot bushes. LOL

Report it ??? Who are the secret service ?? Chopped liver ???

when it comes to a state issue they are. . .

"Roadless areas, in general, represent some of the best fish and wildlife habitat on public lands. The bad news is that there is nothing positive about a road where fish and wildlife habitat are concerned -- absolutely nothing." (B&C Professor, Jack Ward Thomas, Fair Chase, Fall 2005, p.10).

Here is an article about this part of the story from the Corpus Christi caller times:

Sheriff's department didn't investigate Cheney incident until next day
Ambassador to Switzerland was along; no one was drinking, host says

Pam Willeford, U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein

The Kenedy County Sheriff?s Department did not investigate the accidental shooting of prominent Texas lawyer Harry Whittington by Vice President ##### Cheney until the next morning.

Cheney, Whittington and U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein Pam Willeford were hunting quail on the Northwest part of the 50,000-acre Armstrong Ranch Saturday afternoon, when Cheney, firing at a covey of quail, sprayed Whittington with shotgun pellets.

Katharine Armstrong, one of the owners of the ranch, said the priority was to address Whittington?s injuries, and thus it didn't occur to the family to contact the authorities.

"The sheriff came the next morning and took a statement." Armstrong said. "It did not even occur to me. It was not like somebody had robbed a filling station. It was not like a criminal thing."

None in the hunting party was drinking alcohol, Armstrong said.

"No, zero, zippo and I don't drink at all," she said. "No one was drinking."

So, while technically, you may have been correct, I suspect no one would be cited or charged with "breaking the law" if this had happened to John Q public. If they had, the law department responsible would be jerks.
