I have hunted 5bs archery bull once. It is not the largest of units. How can G&f allot 625 permits for one hunt - 10-15 thru 10-21?? DANG!! There cow to bull ratio must be way off track!

the fish and game doesnt kill cows trying to get bull to cow ratio in check. You kill cows trying to get the heard under objective.

So to me it means there are way to many elk on that unit or several land owners are complaining about elk causing problems on their land.

625 tags does sound excessive!

Archery is a year round commitment!!

At least they could give a few more archery tags out! There are plenty of elk there because they cut the tags so much over the last few years.

I also agree that 600 - 650 cow tags is a bit excessive for 5BS. There may need to be that many tags as there is a lot of cow elk in there, but maybe an extra cow hunt in late October could be added to spred 1,200 tags over three hunts instesd of two.

On a related note, have you checked the 2010 reg's yet? The AZGFD combine 5BN with 5BS and will issue 831 general hunt bull tags for all of 5B. This is only fifty or so more tags than 5BN & 5BS combine had in 2009, but now there is no separation of the units.

I sent an email to the AZGFD about the change and the response I received was that the bull to cow ratio in 5BN is too high. I guess the AZGFD tried issuing more bull tags in 5BN, but that has not brought down the ratio. Combining 5BN & 5BS is an attempt to bring the ratio down by letting hunters go where they want in the unit instead of restricting tags to the separate units.

Many may flock to areas within 5BN, but I fear there is a chance that the smaller 5BS unit will get a ton more pressure than it has had in the past several years. I just educated myself about most of 5BS by spending a lot of time, money and effort and now this.
