Guys this is my first time attempting to post and it will absolutely amaze me if this actually works. Anyhow I have been reading many of your posts for a while and learning a lot from many of you and decided to give it a shot who knows it might actually work. This is last Novembers deer he probably isn't great for out west but for Nebraska he is a great deer. I actually found him the year before during muzzle loader season. At 170 yards and we can only use open sites on muzzleloaders I didn't take the shot. I figured I would get a chance in the 2 weeks remaining in the season, although I hunted every day I never saw him again. He was in a pretty isolated spot in the sandhills and I found him again in May of this year from then I watched him from a distance with a spotting scope about once a month. This fall I tried to find him at least once a week as he was moving some. The last week before the season I watched him 3 times as the rut was starting. Opening morning I hunted with two friends neither mentioned seeing the deer I got on the tallest hill with the idea of finding him and putting a stalk on him. 3 miles south of me my one partner started north he started a little before light and realized it was too early as he was moving deer he couln't clearly see. Meanwhile three miles north deer in groups of 5 to 10 drifted north into the sandhills. I really thought I was in trouble as I had 38 deer that I could see around me at one time which would have made a stalk impossible.
About 1 hour after first light I saw this deer and a couple other smaller bucks and a hot doe working north he breed the doe about 1/2 mile south and worked north for an easy 100 yard shot. I felt bad about shooting this deer without telling my friend that I had seen the deer. His response was he found him 3 miles south and that's why he started where he did, we both had a good laugh about that. The buck is 27 inches wide and has good mass. I know he's short in some areas. Some of you guys that have some knowledge let me know what you think he'll score he's at the taxidermist now and game and parks will score him later. Great to be part of MM and I promise not to be this wordy in the future.

Thats a great lloking buck! Welcome to MM, youll love it here, just dont listen to the wackos. Id guess your buck will score in the high 150's. Thanks for sharing, and welcome again!

Cornhusker:

Welcome to MonsterMuleys. Congratulations on a fine mule deer.

Nice buck. I was born in Gordon and have family with ranches all over that country I never make it down there to hunt though. My gramps has killed som hogs over the years.

Nice buck and welcome to MM. If you believe half of what you read you will do fine on MM. You can only be part of th gang if you call out(photoshop, high fence, guided, fake, how much did he spend) on every picture of a nice buck that appears. J/K all in fun and games.

Seriously thoguh was that a high fenced hunt?

It's a joke, just giving a newbie a hard time. Again Nice buck and welcome aboard

Welcome and thanks for sharing a great story. I think I can see a hint of a smile remaining on the buck, since he had just finished with the doe. I really like hunting the sandhills and have gone over many times to chase deer during the muzz season.

Very nice buck , congrats . Welcome to Monster Muleys and thanks for sharing...NMHUNTNUTT

Thanks for all the welcomes guys maybe I can learn a few things. Sheepeater Gordon is about 3 hours north and not a whole lot different than where I'm located at. High fences, never seen one in the U.S. seen a few in Africa, sometimes needed in that part of the world. I'm fortunate to be able to hunt thousands of acres of private land just for asking but that is quickly coming to an end. Ted Turner is the largest land owner in Nebraska and is purchasing most large ranches that come up for sale and that ends hunting on them for guys like me. I'm an import from Iowa who found the sandhills of Nebraska 25 years ago along with a teaching and coaching job. Also outside money is quickly becoming a factor in hunting as it always does.

Super nice buck. What the hell kind of evergreen plant is that in the front there? I'm an expert on NW native plants, but we don't have those around here. Looks sort of like a midget pine.

'husker'....congratulations on a fine animal...good story and good pic, too.....keep'em comin'...

The plant is just a yucca or indian soap weed. Its a biannual bloomer. Indians used them for sewing, washing and loations. I use them to put against my back calling coyotes. Forgive the satellite tower I shot the buck in the hills but stage the picture some canyons outside of town because my wife is a decent photographer.

My Mom grew up just north of ellsworth and went to highschool in Chadron, the rest of her siblings all went to school in North Platte. The original ranch they had is now part of the Turner Ranch conglomerate. My Uncles Place, is on the river south of Gordon. My aunts is North of Mullen and my Granddads place which is an awesome place is NW of Gordon Right where the Pine Ridge meets the Sandhills. Some impressive deer come out of there every year. Lots of Turkeys, ducks, geese ect... If there were Mountains there I would probably be living on it.

Sheepeater really cool area I love that country and know it fairly well. I agree with you on the mountains and will probably be looking for mountains myself within 10 years. Although the hills do have an aura about them that is hard to resist. I was talking to a guy at the SCI convention and he told me that he thought Turner's ranches probably had more 200 inch bucks than anywhere right now. I don't know if that's true and with my wallet as shallow as it is I'm not likely to find out.

I would take the SCI guys thoughts with a grain of salt. One of my cousins is a hunting freak and also owns a SuperCub and flys all over that country, he thinks things are getting better but Turners Ranches full of 200" deer I dont think so, save your pennies and go to Sonora.

Davie boy-Yep its me, and yep I saw that toad that your bride killed this year, how are things in Nevada? Looks like your ranch is really starting to produce, I guess the genetics have always been there you just got to let them grow up a little bit. Are you still thinking about coming up sometime. I bought a New Lund boat so I will probably start exploring the breaks this year. Been chasing a few cats around, and still peddling land, thats about it, starting to get zee cabin fever though. Email me when you get a chance. Jamie
