Early CO Rifle

Was hoping someone might have some recomendations on early rifle deer units in Colorado. I hunted unit 74 early 5 years ago and had a great hunt. Looking for somewhere a little closer to home this year, mainly at either 36, 44/45, 47 or 471. I have a friend who hunted 47 last year and had a tough hunt between the hikers and dogs. If anybody has any insight it would be appreciated. Thanks.

I hunted 36 last year. Way to many hikers and elk hunters for me. The trails were buzy and the deer were up very, very, very high.

I think 44 takes lots of points to draw. I hunted 35 last year, lots of hunters, few deer, beautiful country.

I helped on a 47 early hunt 2 years ago. After 4 days of brutal high country, in 3 different drainages, the guy shot a 18 inch 2 point on the way back to the truck. Low deer numbers (one buck over 150), lots of Aspen Yuppies, and big country. (I didn't know so many people wandered in the mountains during the middle of the week.)

I think the units which take low points to draw are that way for a reason. Of the units you listed, I would say 44 would be far and away the best.

From what I've seen of all of the HCB units I've been in Colo the deer densities are low and you have to cover lots of country to find the few pockets of bucks. If you put in the time (and miles) it can be worth the effort. Most of these units are "general" elk units so expect some company in all but the most rugged, remote areas. I hunted the early seasons in G and H in Wyo quite a few years ago and saw a lot more deer in that country but you still had to work for the mature bucks.

Thanks for the responses so far. I am leaning torwards 471 right now. I met someone who hunted this last year and with the points I have right now, 4, I think this is my best bet. Still trying to find out some details on 36. If anyone would be willing to share info on 471 or 36 I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Don't want to rain on the parade, but before you dive headfirst into 44, make sure you get recent info (good advice for any unit ;-). True, 44 has been a "trophy" unit for years and certainly has kicked out some great bucks, but according to the biologists and all the guys I've talked to this year, it is definitely on the way down.

They are having a "real" winter up there this year, and I know 4 guys who live in that country, and every one of them is freaked out because of the winterkill they're seeing already on does/fawns, and between them, they've found 7 good bucks, all clearly taken by lions. Given the press that place has gotten, it's gone from a 2-point draw unit just a few years ago, to 4 points to guarantee a tag in the first two seasons, and at least 8 points to get the coveted 4th season tag. And there's a reason you haven't seen a dozen articles about the place in all the magazines this year--they killed dang few good ones this year, and not many good ones were seen, even by the hundreds of elk hunters that descend on the place.

Seems to be following the same old pattern--a few good bucks get whacked in a particular unit, the press shines the spotlight, then everyone and his dog wants to hunt there and run up the points, then Mother Nature does what she does and the next few years the guys who blow their points get left holding the bag. Could be 5 or more years before it's worth drawing again.

Sorry to bust a bubble, but if you're like me, you burn pref points carefully, and don't get too caught up in the hype.

Good luck

Have hunted 471 for elk. Lots of people......hikers, nature fakes, etc. Aspen is not a real "hunter friendly" town either. Hard to find a place to eat, get gas, soda, etc.

Unit 36 is beautiful. The area is extremely rugged and very tough to get into. Horses would be nice but Vail makes it extremely tough to get anything like that in there, in fact it may be against the law. I could not believe how much range is up there and how few deer there are. I think the winter range limits the deer in this area. The tree huggers flock to these canyons every weekend and I loved the faces and comments we got from them. We did see some good 4 point bucks but they were literally on top of the highest mountains we could find. Wyoming is much better hunting. We had fun but neither of us shot anything. I doubt we will be going back soon. We like some of the other areas you have discussed and were thinking of trying for them.

Hunted Unit 36 the year before last. Was somewhat disapointed in the amount of deer we saw, but still had a great time in some awesome country! There is a lot of country, and all that country makes it hard to find the few pockets of bucks. Saw only a few decent 4's, and they were elusive. We came back empty handed.

No doubt the tree huggers love this area. They hike the trails every day of the week, and are not hesitant to voice their disgust with the barbarians that would kill a deer. The owner of the Vail Golf Course said I was an idiot, because deer don't live high in the mountains. He said they can't survive in rugged terrain like that. They can only survive near towns and that is why he had deer (big deer as he put it) on his golf course. Well, I guess I'll continue being an idiot.

Wow, you learn something new every day. I used to live in the Vail Valley and didn't know that it was possibly illegal to hunt with a horse there? Aspen Adventures how does Vail make it hard or almost illegal?

Also I just learned from Rackster that someone owns the PUBLIC Vail Golf Course. It's always been owned by the Town of Vail, don't know who was blowing smoke up your !@#? Maybe he said you were an idiot because you believed him?

Although you are both right about the deer being in little pockets of rugged terrain. I hunt this area every year for elk and always see a few big bucks way up high. Getting close to them is another story. The amount of mature bucks has definitely decreased in the unit 36 high country IMHO.

Sneak has given some good advice on 44 and 36 would apply as well. They have gotten a lot of snow and cold. Expect some winter kill.

Raidernation good luck in whatever hunt you choose.

OK COwhitey, My apologies for using the wrong word. So he was the manager of the golf course. My point still stands, since you could't read bewteen the lines "that he was obviously out to lunch".

cowhitey, Vail makes it tough to get horses into the area because at some of the trail heads there is barely enough room for a car let alone a truck. And forget about trying to get in a trailer on a truck. Also, I heard that it was possibly against policy or something to have a horse up there, similar to the Cottonwood canyons above Salt Lake. I did not see one horse up there in all of my trips into that area. Sorry I did not explain it better in my last post. If it is not illegal then I appologize. But, with the EXTREME lack of access to the area it seems that even if it is legal, it is tough at best to get a horse in there. And this means a lot to me because I will likely not go back without a horse. That country is toooo big for my little legs.

Horsepucky I have alot of friends in the Eagle Valley and there is a ton of hunting, you can park a horse trailer on multiple trail heads into 36, It is a piece of cake to get a trailer up to the Piney country, and I have even dropped them in on Vail Pass. There are still big bucks up there but nobody ever said that it was easy. And as far as the Winter Range goes, my buddies have been telling me especially in 44 that there are huge bucks hanging out in the Subdivisions especially Cordillera, so instead of getting chased around by the orange army they are growing to ripe old ages, which is what we all know it takes to make Monster Muleys, just gotta know where and how to hunt them, times are a changing we all have to adapt alittle and if that means hunting monsters on fringes of subdivisions so be it.
