Going to go for it this year with max points for area 7. Probably need more, but if you don't put in you can't draw. Do any of you know a good outfit that has drop camps in the area for DIY hunters?

Packer ,
I drew area 7, two years ago with 3 points so max points its possible. anyway , if you draw i know a land owner that is reasonable to get access from and his place holds some real nice bulls .

good luck

The maximum amount of points anyone can have for elk, deer, and pronghorn is 4 going into the 2010 draw.

Thats right 4 is the max going into 2010 and with max points in unit 7 you should have a decent chance of gettn that tag.

The paste job does not stay where the entry is suppose to be.

Those look to be pretty good odds for one of the best units in the state. Seems there are many lesser units with way worse odds. Have you seen the 5 bulls in 5 days article in the latest Hunt N Fool?

Howdy

Yes I know the odds are slim, but with 4 it's max and a guys gotta start trying sometime.
I still need the names of some folks that supply drop camps in that area.
I would be interested in access as long as it's in the Laramie Peaks. Also I might add, is the any wilderness in area 7 that I will need a guide?
Thanks for the come backs so far it's appricated.

packer ,
sorry for my mistake i must have only have had 2 points either way i drew the tag in 08 and had a great hunt ! I didn't realize we had to be that precise on the points . good luck anyway

No wilderness in the unit and i'm thinking you'll have about a 1 in 3 chance of getting that tag so the odds aren't that bad. Good luck!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-04-10 AT 02:26PM (MST)[p]I hunted this unit archery and rifle this past year. Have hunted it with friends alot. There are a lot of bulls around 280 to 310 class. Not many 350 plus bulls on public. Looking at Wyoming outfitters awards magazine the past two years 360-370 were the top bulls taken. I'm sure most of them were on private Land. Lot's of private. A LOT MORE bow hunters the past year. Quality is going down with the tag number increases. Still public land to hunt. You don't need a drop camp around Laramie peak, if you have horses. Good luck.

With 5000+ tags (bull and cow), and very limited public land, area 7 is rapidly resembling a general area... unless you have access to private land. With all of the public pressure, the elk hunting on private should still be good. We hunted some of the most remote stuff in the area this year, and there were 3 seperate outfits with horses... about 15 hunters total in a 4 square mile area... it was a zoo! this was opening day of archery not rifle!

I ran into the same thing in unit 7. Lots and lots of private and the elk know that after opening day of archery, yes I said archery. Never seen so much pressure from archery hunters in a unit.

It used to be a much, much better unit to archery hunt.

If you get the tag... I would highly, highly, highly recommend you purchase the most recent map that has all the state owned property in that unit.

There are many people who post state property and state easements into state property. They bring out guns to protect that proprety. Bring a video camera... You need record these people then call the law to prove what happened. You might want pack a pistol yourself. A couple of these idiots are really looking for a fight. Be prepared!!!

Just a bit of trivia for you... According to WGFD area 7 has had more elk hunters than any other area in the state for the last 2 years... and yes, that includes general hunting areas.

Area 7 is far, far over objective for overall elk numbers. It is also a huge area, one of the larger ones in the state, and therefore, as the logic goes, can handle alot of hunters supposedly spread out over a large area. Unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending on your point of view), the large amount of intermingled private land does much more to influence population levels than the overall hunting pressure. So basically, the Game and Fish uses the only tool available to them, and issues more and more tags to try and trim the population.

Rumor has it that area 7 might become a general hunt area if the population doesn't get more in line w/ the objectives. Of course, it probably won't make much of a difference, for many of the reasons stated previously.

I heard that rumor as well... I also heard they might split the area. But the only solution I have heard that actually addresses the problem in the area ( which is WAY too many hunters for WAY too little public access)is to split the season i.e. early and late tags... at least this would split the pressure up a little and possibly keep a few elk from running onto private land. What concerns me, is the WGFD is doing little to address the issue. For several years, hunters and landowners have been complaining about the sheer numbers of hunters in the area. I have talked to G&F commissioners, game wardens, and G&F biologists for the area and they all agree that something needs to be done and that adding more tags or turning the area into a General unit won't solve the access issue, which also won't solve the herd size issue. They agree that adding tags or making 7 a general will simply serve to push elk onto private land faster and would actually be counterproductive. So... in 2010 to solve this problem they did..... nothing... same story different year...

Well it sounds like it's going to take a lot of home work.. a scouting trip is a must. I thank all of you for your efforts in giving me ideas, I've learned a lot. Has any of you heard of a outfit in that area called Laramie Peaks Outfitters, anyone have some info on them?
