i have enough points to draw this unit for elk but i have heard it is very tuff on the archery hunt any input would be appreicated

You may want to do a search on this subject because there are quite a few posts from past years. South Central Utah can be a hot son of a gun in August! If there is a full moon plus hot, dry weather it could be a very tough hunt! You better have a good pair of boots and legs if you draw...it can eat both up in a hurry! You will likely hit some of the rut during the later part of the archery season...you may want to save up a lot of vacation time because you will likely need it!

I love the Dutton. But yes it is a very tough archery hunt. If I was in your shoes I would be going to the Dutton.

been a while since i have been on the unit is there much water i guy could hunt?

Have you ever heard the saying "You better pack a lunch" that applies here, maybe pack two just to be safe.

great hunt big bulls, no easy access.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

No easy access is right. Get a horse packer lined up ahead of time. Then you don't have to worry about diving down into some of those nasty canyons. I didn't use one and it was a butt kicker. Don't let the smile fool you...

i have horses but i i dont want to pack water in for them to drink any springs you can camp around

There are a lot of springs on that rockpile and year round running water in Cottonwood Canyon if you are looking to pull a nice trailer. Get there early though, it fills up quick!!

i've always pictured it worse than that, that just looks like elk country to me????????

Yeah, it is just elk country. A lot of guys drop down into steep canyons to hunt elk. That is mostly because they plan on just taking thier elk out the bottom to the road. But what if there is no road down lower? Which is the case in most places on the Dutton.

i'd climb mt everest for the bull on your back! i think you did qreat job, but i just always pictured it as being more of , like they say, "a rock pile"

LAST EDITED ON Jan-15-10 AT 03:58PM (MST)[p]Yeah, probably not the best photo to really show what most of the unit looks like. It has a lot of ledges, towers, cliffs and drop offs. I found some that kind of show the country...

Heck yea it's a tough hunt. If the greatest hunter/guide/outfitter that ever lived couldn't score on a bull in that unit then nobody can. I don't even know why people put in for that unit.
