Saturday I drove from my house to Estes for a Holiday sale. On my way down the Forest service access road I pulled up behind a car with his flashers on and witnessed this most amazing elk migration. I was sorry I didn't bring my camera....but luckily one of my neighbors' daughter, Carrie Briscoe, did and made this recording. There were only 3 or 4 cars at this place at this time. I was lucky to be in one of them!"

LAST EDITED ON Jan-12-10 AT 10:30AM (MST)[p]I am seen this before on here as it was posted by someone else.
Without even watching this one I can say that you will see the elk slip and slide across the ice roadway.

I'd never seen this one, but you're right, one point, one calf falls, than about 4 others trip over him, was kind of humorous.

My grandpa used to tell me stories about disappointment valley and some old 8mm film he saw of someone filming the elk migrating through there.

They cut a path he said 3-400 yards wide, literally over a thousand at least of elk in one herd.

i'd guesstimate around 375 give or take a few,
before fish & game slaughters with major cow hunts for several years I could show you a herd that was 1,100+ it was actually several groups of 200-300 that herded up,it was awesome to see that many in one pile, then the dwr turned them in to money, now a big herd is 75 animals..................

soon the love in his heart will be the rage in his fist

Jesus is coming and boy is he pissed

First time I went to Montana with my friend back in 2000 the very first morning we were sitting in his truck looking across the wide valley and then heard on CB others talking and saying they are leaving the meadow and heading north.
Later when we were headed to another area we spotted the Elk herd off in the distance headed north, but it still must have been a group of 300-400 elk lots of cows.
By that after noon we heard that they had broke off into smaller groups of 20-30 or so and scattered all over that region. Sure was an awesome sight to see so many Elk in a group headed to higher ground. Four days later I got my Bull about five miles in another area north of where we seen the main herd.

Yep Colorado elk, better question would be how many bulls worth anything did you see?

hardhorn I noticed the same thing. pretty sad is right.

btw, MONSTER MULEYS IS THE BEST FORUM!!!!!!!!!!

I wasn't expecting to see a big bull in the video cause a bull of any size isn't hanging out with the cows this time of year. only the spikes and a few raghorns are with them.

great video though.

Nice sight But you wouldn't see too many Big bulls in a herd like that they are off staying to get back some weight and stay out of harms way still. Now if it was feeding station close by they would all be there LOL

It is truly fun and amazing to see a large herd on the move. I remember an old Gordon Eastman video years ago that showed video footage of a herd on the move in deep snow that was estimated at 1600 animals. I personally have witnessed a group of 72 animals on the move in Nevada's Area 23 (in 2000), and while deer hunting in the Merritt Creek Area of Elko Co. in 2007 my Dad, brother, and I videotaped a herd we estimated at around 90 elk! For us, it was an unforgettable experience! And this fall (October 2009), I was fortunate to video tape a herd in Area 23 numbering 41 animals!
