Last spring I posted some questions about the youth late elk hunt and recieved a pm from "jabber" he gave me some info and only wanted a report of how the hunt went. I am not sure I have seen anything from him for a while. Pm me jabber if you are still out there.
For anyone else interested I have twin boys who drew the late hunt and got skunked along with 98 percent of the other hunters. it is a tough youth hunt. We were lucky enogh though to have a great local who called us a couple of weeks ago and informing us some landowners were still having troubles and they had decided to see if the youth that did not tag out could help with the elk. ( trial thing I guess ) anyway we got special authorization and my boys were able to go down to Jensen and Last night Riley thumped a rag bull at 316 yards one shot. Jacob ( twinner 2 ) shot another rag bull at 400 yards one shot. I was extremely proud of them and grateful for a second chance to fill thier tags. The boys are twelve and I was worried if they could shoot that good , but they were awesome.
thanks for listening to my rants. Layne

Sounds like you are very proud of your boys as you should be. Now we need to see some pics of the happy hunters.

Nice job Monroe!! I was out there Monday for a depredation hunt that was supposed to run till Saturday. When I talked to the landowner he mentioned the youth coming in to hunt those elk. I thought that was the best idea ever! After sitting the morning and night hunt in that hay blind, I decided to bag out of there in hopes some youth could kill those bulls! Glad to see you got 2 of them! I know how far that shot was to where they come out and I know how cold it was out there! Props to you guy's on a couple of great bulls!!!

silentstalker, Thanks for saving some of those elk for us. I have to say that I was a little sceptical when we first got out there. The land owner had another adult hunter who was hunting the morning so we went to another landowners place and almost had shots at some real nice bulls, but it didn't quite work out. The fish and game really wanted us to shoot the smaller bulls anyway, so we hunted fri night with the hunter who had hunted that morning. I figured there was no way we would get three bulls lined out to all get shots, so we told the other guy to shoot if he had a shot and told my boys to just be ready and see what happens. The gentleman shot and missed and the whole herdheaded to the river. we had watched this group of rag bull sit out at 585 yards and figured there was no way they were going to work our way, but sat it out anyway. low and behold they did and when they got out to three hundred yards I told my boys to shoot only if they had a clear shot. I had worked with them on shooting without flinching by sometimes not putting bullets in the chamber and letting them think there was, and i think it payed off. Riley shot and took out the front shoulder and it was going know where. Jacob then had a clear shot at around 400 and boom it was over. Then after it was all over the othr gentle man was able to get one as well. It was fun as heck and I can't say enough for the landownder and Morgan Caldwell (fish and game ) for making it possible. I was probably more deflatted than my boys when we didn't get them one one the regular hunt, so when this other chance came up i just prayed they could get it done and they made me proud.

Prism, Thanks for your comments as well!! Layne

Layne,

You guy's did great! That other adult hunter was out there Monday too. A guy he was with shot a 5 point that morning. I showed up monday under the impression from the landowner that those guy's would be gone and I had the place to myself.

I hope that next year they extend the youth season and don't have a depredation hunt until all the youth have harvested and only if necessary. It is tailor made for a youth hunt other than the longer shots. Congrats to your sons!!

silentstalker, I agree with all you said. I sent a lengthy letter to the fish and game after the regular youth season and kindly explained that basically the Jensen hunt is not a youth hunt. at least not in november when the largest landowner in the area is driving the elk onto thier land to charge alot of money, and then all the dinosour monument rules makes it hard for a youth to get a shot at anything. we were teaching my kids ethics so therefore we never let them fire a shot during the regular season. If they moved this hunt to January and the landowners cooperate it is a great youth opportunity and helps with depredation as well.
As a side note the long shot thing is true ,but truly we were greatful for those shots as most we would of had during the season were 6-8 hundred yrds on the run, by the time you get outside the monument property and put weapns together and load them.
enough rambling i guess. Thanks again for your comments and the end result was what we have youth hunts for in the first place. It helped my boys create a greater passion for hunting not to mention the great memories together. layne

I did not think about the Dinosaur monument rules too. I hope they will consider the extended season for next years youth. It has the potential to really be a great hunt. I am so glad you guys got your bulls. I know there was a kid in there the weekend before that we talked to. He had just missed a decent 5 point. Not sure if he killed or not. I fully support all youth opportunities and hope this continues!

BTW, What caliber rifles were your sons shooting? My son just turned 12 and I am looking for a rifle he can comfortably shoot that will kill up to elk. I am thinking about the 7mm-08. I already have a .243 Just curious what your boys shot and how they handled the recoil??

They were both shooting 280's with muzzlebreaks. I had a browning 280 that I bought from a coworker ten years ago and it came with several boxes of shells. I am mostly a bowhunter so I don't burn through shells, so I talked my boss into selling me his weatherby 280 with fluted barrel and a break, so they could both use the same shells. He even gave me more shells with his gun. The break makes them loud but takes out alot of the recoil. Again I think the key was when we practiced shooting I would sometimes put a shell in and sometimes not so they would never know and had to learn to ease into the shot and not flinch. Honestly they kicked my trash, as I don't claim to be a good shot with a gun. hope this helps. I have heard the 7mm-08 is a good kids gun with little recoil.
If you put your boy in for that hunt and he draws get with me cause we were just getting the unit figured out and I could give you some good pointers. Honestly though if they don't change it a little it is tough for kids with slower reflexes than adults to get past the rules of the monument and get on a bull before they blow the country. You also cannot hunt that landowners place during the regular hunt. It is on the wrong side of the river, but there are others that will let you within the boundries. Layne

Thanks Layne. I am leaning more towards the early youth season. But have not ruled that late hunt out. September appeals to me a bit more! Thanks for the info on the rifles and I will get in touch with ya if we go the late hunt route.
