The Columbian (Vancouver):
WOODLAND MAN, 38, SENTENCED TO PROBATION FOR KILLING ELK

"A Woodland, Washington man was sentenced Monday to 3 years probation after pleading guilty to hunting elk in the Olympic Nat'l Park.

Robert Hurst, 38, was ordered to forfeit any hunting licenses, stamps or permits, as well as perform 80 hours of community service. US Dist. Court Magistrate Judge Richard Creatura in Tacoma also ordered Hurst to forfeit all parts of the illegally taken 6 x 7 trophy Roosevelt bull elk.

The incident happened September 19, 2007 in the Discovery Peak area, when Hurst called the elk within bow range using a common tactic known as bugling. He then shot and killed the elk with a bow and arrow, according to a press release from the US Atty's Office in Seattle. The elk was field dressed and packed out over the next several days.

Five days later, an agent with the WDFW contacted Hurst about having the elk parts. Forensic analysis tied the elk parts to a kill site in the park, the press release said. Hunting is illegal within the natinal park."

Well, another slap on the wrist to a poacher who was lookin' for an edge and got nailed.
