LAST EDITED ON Feb-24-06 AT 10:52AM (MST)[p]Good Morning. My name is Greg and I'm the County Surveyor in Mobile, Alabama.
My father, brother and I hunted in Region H last year. None of us were fortunate enought to bring any meat home. We saw elk, coyotes, a black bear, but only one small forkhorn. The terrain was pretty extreme for us flatlanders and we may not have wandered far enough from camp.

Anyway, we wanted to try again this year and we are thinking of trying Region D. I searched the existing posts for info on this Region, but found very little. I'm not looking for a trophy necessarily, just someplace with pretty good odds of taking a decent buck. Any information on this region would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to PM or e-mail me if you would rather.

Thanks,
Greg

Ive hunted Reg D with my Dad on both public and private land the last 8 years. Theres plenty of public land but with that comes a lot of hunters. Try to hook up with a rancher that will let you pay a fee to have access to the property. That will probably be your best bet. Also, in those 8 years the largest buck we have taken is just a respectable buck. We have seen NO monsters. Nothing even over 24" wide. We are not trophy hunters but the areas weve hunted in just doesnt have the gene pool to grow wider bucks. The average buck has been around 18-20". We like the hunt and the meat and thats why we go back. Call Game and Fish for names of ranchers that can give you access to private land. Medicine Bow Nat'l Forest is a big area to hunt thats public.

Region D is a big area, however I disagree with what Wiszard has told you, there are some great bucks in that area, of course as a non-resident the specified "region" is a vague term. I have hunted many years all over that region with very good success. Just like 95% of the places you can hunt throughout the west there are a lot of people to contend with. In my experience the harder you hunt the more you will benifit. I am not saying that Wiszard does not hunt hard I am just saying in my general opinion I can't count the hundreds of times we have come home from this area only to have the town beg and plead with us to tell them where we were taking our deer because as they put it the deer were non-existent. The truth of the matter is the reason they are not seeing the big deer or any deer for that matter is because they get discouraged by the amounts of pressure and tend to drive around and drink themselves stupid. IMHO!!!!!! Area 81 is where I spent a better part of 12 years hunting and between my dad, his hunting buddy, and I we took deer from 185" all the way down. The biggest being a non-typical that my dad shot years ago that was 32" wide. Although I am not a firm believer in width=monster deer but I personally have shot two deer over 28" and one over 30". The rest being relatively close to the 25-26"
mark. Hunt hard, stay off the roads and out of the vehicle and you should see plenty of deer. If you are just looking for average deer I don't see any problem completing this task. If you want or need more info private message me back and I could probably point you in the right direction, although I won't be divulging any super secret locations I can still point you in a direction where you can be successful

Hard to believe you could hunt D for 8 years and not see at least one good deer. Region D has been hammered but there are some great bucks if your willing to get out and get after them. I guided in D for a few years and we knocked down some good deer.

I have hunted D twice and saw a couple really nice bucks.. One was a 26 wide 5by4 that would have gone a solid 185 and I think he was fairly young..He was very tall and had really long tines..A buddy of mine took a 34inch 7by7 also.. but before you get all excited..I don't think this is the hunt for you unless you get access to private land.. The bucks that we see on public land that are 24 inches or better are in very steep terrain at a minimum of 1-2 miles from the roads..There are very good genes in that area, but it gets hammered by hunters..The big bucks are very smart and nearly nocturnal..We hike in 1-2 hours before light and when we see the bucks at the crack of dawn they are already heading for their bedding areas..even that far in..They are very spooky..Even when you do see the big boys it can be very difficult to get a shot off because of all the thick oakbrush..I really enjoy the area because I know I have a chance at a monster, but I don't think that it is for most people. Good luck on whatever you decide!
