Genetics Fl vs. BC vs boulder vs Dutton

Curious what units produce better bulls NOT just older bulls. I am getting to the point where I will eventually draw my OIL Utah elk tag and have been looking at the 3 year average age of bulls harvested.

However a buddy pointed out that Boulder, Dutton and others "south" produce more top end bulls (over 340).

Again to sum it up what units produce the highest scoring bulls? I know my odds of taking one over 340 are slim but, for the same draw odds, I might as well pick a unit where 350 plus bulls are taken every year vs. one where few are taken.

Again in summary my basic question is what units have the best genetics.

Score is far from everything but, lets be honest, I would rather hunt a unit with higher scoring bulls all other things begin equal.

I will use this info to narrow down what weapon and unit I hunt. I prefer to pack in and avoid crowds.

After 10 years of applying to Utah (I have 8 points now) I am going to make the most of what likely will be my only Utah elk hunt bar a near miracle (with new reg's, higher tag #'s and waiting period when I draw).

Thanks DonV Ohio

I would agree that that statement is true, especially since these two units have the worst odds. But for him they would both be less than a 1% chance at a tag. Not really one he could plan on drawing anytime soon.

I think you'll find the Boulder will produce the best bulls of the 3 you mentioned. I have never been to the Book Cliffs, but have hunted Fishlake and been with a friend on the Boulder. There is no need to pack in on the Boulder or FL. You can hunt off the road. Be warned, the Boulder is a big plateau with lots of timber. A tough hunt if there not talking. Good luck.

You have to remember that boulder was closed to hunting for awhile and that let the bulls age I think the unit is on a decline The next couple years should still produce. Boulders is a large unit but a tough hunt and lets them grow too.I think san jaun is still the top unit in utah

Thanks for the input guys.

Robb I am getting tired of you smart remarks, and taking every chance you can find to take pokes at me.

I politely request that you do not respond to any of my posts. I would rather get no help then any help from you. I will refrain from trading punches and smart remarks, although I could easily hit you with a few.

Again please do not respond to any of my posts on any hunting website. Ever.

Thanks You,

Don

Don, I didn't give it a thought until......... Now I'm curious.

Miss applying two years?? draw the second year??

Really none of my damn business, just curious.

Drawing the second year would encourage me.

Careful Hunter------

You certainly do not want to get a spankin' for a question ....

That was my question-----never drawn--- apply for 10 years and only have 8 points.

Thanks for your input donV....

If ya do not want guys to respond or question something, it may be best that YOU do not EVER post...afterall, if it isn't there then no one can respond....make sense?

Unless of course you own these hunting websites?

I would agree with what some of the other guys have said. You need to decide if you want to try to draw something now or later.
It's obvious that for an any weapon tag you will have to wait another 5-10yrs for a Pahvant, San Juan, Boulder, or Fishlake tag- or yet any of the top units.
If you are willing to do archery you might be in the ball game.
You might consider the Beaver and Panguitch lake units if you want to draw this year. I've hunted both of these during the archery and have seen plenty of 340-350 class bulls. However, just because you see them doesn't gaurantee anything.
Good luck.

I would love it if I thought that I could draw San Juan within 10 years with 8 points now! There are about 300 people who applied with more points than that last year. At 2 tags per year for max point tags, that is a long wait! Even if they were to double the number of max point tags to 4, that would be a 75 year wait. And the best odds for those with less than max points is 0.4%. Unfortunately now that they made it where we can apply for more than one species, that makes our odds even more dismal. Someone has got to "win" though right??
